out of my dumb arrogance I'd have to add here that now a security officer can have the power of a police officer... wow, My mind is blown !Offender Thanks this. -
114% agree with everything you've written in this thread Lucar.
Many other actions could have been taken to end this situation with less than lethal. There are many places in this country where Police have been charged with man slaughter for killing an unarmed assailant. Less than lethal options are viable and available. It should be considered negligence to not equip yourself with those tools as an armed guard or L.E.O. -

You may want to pay attention to these 3 sections, I'll make it easy for you.
- A special conservator of the peace shall have all the powers, functions, duties, responsibilities and authority of any other conservator of the peace within such geographical limitations as the court may deem appropriate within the confines of the county, city or town that makes application or within the county, city or town where the corporate applicant is located, limited to the judicial circuit wherein application has been made, whenever such special conservator of the peace is engaged in the performance of his duties as such.
- The special conservator of the peace is a "law-enforcement officer" for the purposes of Article 4 (§ 37.2-808 et seq.) of Chapter 8 of Title 37.2.
- The special conservator of the peace may use the title "police" on any badge or uniform worn in the performance of his duties as such.

If personal attacks and insults persist, I'm guessing what started out as a good thread, won't last long.
d o g and wonderdog24 Thank this. -
Assuming your talking about my post, I don't feel correcting ignorance is a "personal attack". -
Facts from the original article in review (since it seems some folks have posted without reference to the stated facts of the case as reported in the news media):
1. Gorin Sojic was asked to leave the premises of Love's. Think about that for a minute. What would prompt a company that relies on the business from truckers to ask a trucker to leave?
2. Gorin decided to return and began approaching the counter, "as if he was attempting to go behind the counter".
3. The Love's employee and another customer witnessed the shooting.
4. Dayton police advised Love's they should have security before they opened the business, because "the area near the truck stop is known to police as a high drug and crime area".
5. Joshua Karp, the security guard, had at least two prior stints as a security guard. Each time completing training. He had more than adequate training for his job. However, each time you change jobs you need to reapply for a new registration. He had a permit to carry a firearm, but not as a security guard. He was apparently advised by the security company that his registration had arrived, when it had not.
Seems to me that Mr. Sojic very well may have been upset about something, argued aggressively, and was asked to leave the premises. He came back with what appeared to be intentions to get behind the service counter. No business in their right mind would want Mr. Sojic behind the counter at this stage of the ongoing encounter, and I'm sure had Mr. Sojic injured or killed the Love's employee that the security company and security guard would be the subject of scorn and contempt for failure to do their job.
Mr. Sojic, however well in the right he may have been if he had a beef with Love's or anyone inside of Love's, crossed the line at some point and was kicked out. Mr. Sojic chose to return to escalate or continue the argument, apparently in a threatening manner. Mr. Sojic bears the brunt of responsibility for the result, which is likely why his family is only asking for $25,000 in damages in their wrongful death lawsuit.
... you know, all those common sense things momma should have taught you.biggare1980, bergy, NavigatorWife and 3 others Thank this. -
The Security Guards mugshot from his stolen property case
-
There sure are a lot of posters getting overly emotional here apparently just because this was a truck driver, if it was a ghetto gangsta type thug doing the same thing the trucker was doing everybody would be cheering on the staff at Love's for the way it was handled.
Its not like truckers don't have their share of kooks, and I CC, if somebody was coming at me like the trucker here was coming at the Loves employees they will get shot as well as only a fool would let an erratic/insane/drunk/drugged person get close enough to assault them whether they are armed or not. One punch or one kick can kill you, a smart person like the security guard makes sure kooks don't get the chance to do that.
Why isn't everybody calling it like it is? The trucker was asked to leave, if you apologists ran into the same situation on your front porch and the trucker instead of leaving was trying to force his way into your house I would think most of you would shoot him too, I wouldn't give it a second thought. -
And what if your (referring to No one in particular) child or wife became angry and charged me. I can shoot them and you'll be OK with it
maybe we'll even become good friends
There's a lot of speculation from all of us in this thread. None of us know what really happened. Well just have to wait and see the video before condemning the Security Guard.NavigatorWife Thanks this.
