While I have been to NYC far too many times, it can be daunting and intimidating your first few times there, but you do kind of get used to it. There are some out of the way places that are even worse. Like some posters have said, pretty much anywhere in the Pittsburgh, PA area really suck, like having your tractor tires on one sidewalk and your trailer tires on the sidewalk on the other side just to make the turn without rubbing against telephone poles, buildings, etc., places in the North Carolina mountains that can give you white knuckles as well, I'm thinking of a state route that wound it's way up a mountain with continual switch backs, tractor tires on one side of the road, trailer tires on the other, all the way up and down to a little refractories plant at the top of the mountain, it's somewhere near US 23 near the TN/NC border.
As far as not being fired for refusing to go to NYC, good luck. Unless your company has a non-forced dispatch policy you're going to have to suck it up, talk to your boss so he forces someone else to do it or find a new job.

Lock your doors, duct tape air lines to connectors on trailer, make sure your back doors are locked, and sleep with one eye open, you should be ok
