Transport is Grade 70. Good Crane Operators will not use your G70 to lift...smart HH's will not use G80 or G100...

IGNORE THE RATINGS ON THEM AND THE TEMPTATION TO USE THEM THEREFORE USING LESS SECUREMENT!...the reason is the metallurgical makeup or "recipe" to make the steel. G70 has some stretch factor to it, you NEED this because of the "shock loading" of a trailer riding and bouncing down the road. The higher carbon and other contents in the G80/100 will cause the links to shatter or shear.
This is why you NEVER tie any thing down with a boomer only, they are forged steel and do not have any stretch factor. They can and will break, I have broken every type of securement over my career.

5/16 is puppy chain, for tying up your puppy dog, or for you bikers your wallet.
3/8 is rookie chain, the minimum that really should be used practically, if you know how to calculate load securement you'll get it.
7/16 is a good choice for up to 6/7 axle, has a good rating but isn't stupid big for the smaller loads.
1/2 is man chain, this is the the only choice for Heavy Haul.

    dogcatcher Thanks this.

    Practicality...
    1/2 G70 chain - rated 11,300lbs WLL
    5/8 G70 chain - rated 15,800lbs WLL
    1/2-5/8 ratchet binder - rated 13,000lbs WLL
At some point you have to draw the line, and as you can see you don't get full use of 5/8 G70 chain rating from the binder anyhow so your leaving something on the table...

1/2" is man chain...5/8" is small man syndrome chain...

    bergy Thanks this.

Hammer I concur. I carry 2 5/16 chains and 2 boomers for OH crap sits that pallet of BS that goes on the neck or tail. Other than that they are use less!
I also carry 40 n 50 4" straps for those no chain loads

If you are taking the chain through a lashing ring then connecting the binder then connecting the binder other end to the chain before it goes through the lashing ring then the binder is in effect only taking half the load the chain is so you can use a 13000lbs binder with higher grade chain if you know how.

Soo. Who sells 40/50ft straps??? and are they still rated 5400lbs or greater??
Re 1/2 chains/binders, I think this is the limit I would go towards to start out with.

Who is using ratched binders vs sinch down binders?? Why not use ratchet???
