Looking at purchasing a New W900l. I would like some input on the isx 15 are they still having the same amount of problems with them as they did with the 2010/2012 motors. Thanks for the your thoughts.

They are a sinking ship at present. I know many die hard Pete and kw guys in the patch that are switching to stars and volvo.

Sad to say yes, but yes. Volvo motors are pretty good when it comes to emissions. Just not the d16, that's a boat anchor.

WOW. My neighbor has a new VNL780 with a Volvo and the i shift he really likes it. Maybe I shouldn't rush on this and go and look them over again. You hear so many different stories. I have never owned a Volvo with a Volvo power plant. Lot of money to spend if the motor is crap. I was impressed with the new Mack CHU613 Rawhide Edition took it for a test drive I was very impressed but KW is what everyone one in the family had years ago. Guess things have changed a lot in the last 10 years. Thanks.

I wasn't a big volvo guy but I now have a 2014 xe16. 730. Volvo was using these emission technologies in Europe 7 years before it started here so they are well ahead of the pack.

The d16 issues were turbo and injector cup problems and both were solved.

The ishift is unarguably the best automated transmission on the market right now as well.

I work in the oilfields and haul 140,000lbs everyday so naturally volvo was not my first choice, nor was a auto. Truth be told they were my last. I was a cummins man but research had led me towards detroit specifically in a star, we had one picked out but it rode like crap then I decided to try out the volvo and it rode like a caddie.

There are alot if stars in the patch and logging areas I work in and the running joke has become if you buy a star expect to be in the shop within a week (as that has happened to 3 of our o/o) just for minor emissions issues. If you have a cummins expect to be in the shop within a week and never return.

Me and a friend bought trucks the exact same time and are on the same run everyday together. I have a 2014 730 xe package he has a 2014 western star 600 d16 2050 torque 18 speed etc. All day we keep up to eachother just fine, on acceleration he pulls away but on hills I stay right there, in power plus mode I can crawl away a bit.

But here's the difference. He has to mash gears all day and rev hus truck to 1800 to stay with me, all the while I'm on cruise control eating a sandwich. The biggest kicker is that I am putting in 50L a day less of fuel than he is in a truck that rides better. (keep in mind these are heavy spec trucks so maybe the star with a lighter suspension will ride nice)

I haven't been in the shop yet, he's been in 3 times.

Downside is his truck looks more manly, but with my bigger paycheck I can buy some extra manliness!

The only other thing left is the weak resale value argument. Simple math will debunk that one. Volvo was $18,000 cheaper than the star. 50L a day times $1.20/L (sorry canadian units) is $60 times 20 days a month I work is $1200 a month times 60 months I pay the truck $72,000, now add the initial savings your at $90,000 over a 5 year span. Why would I care about resale when this thing almost just bought me a new truck.

    Sorry for the rant! Lol

I understand. I'm 61 and looking for comfort I like running at 65/68 sometimes I'll put it up some but I'm happy just doing my own thing. I'll take MPG over speed now adays. The D16 is holding up pretty good.

Yes so far. The xe16 is a different motor than the d16. It is a d16 motor but it has very large connecting rods and extra bearing surface to help with heat distribution because these trucks were designed to lug all day. It shifts by 1500 and lugs down to 1000 without heating up too much and with my kind of weight shifting at 1500 usually means your gonna be slowing down alot. It does it all so effortlessly.
