save the talking points
no one is whining or a victim, i didnt ask the question
i drive my truck when i want, where i want and dont ask DOT, dispatchers, quallcomms for permission
ITS CALLED FREEDOM
my statement was that it is absurdity that a grown man has to ask "if is LEGAL" for him to go somwhere to eat
Using a truck for personal reasons

or use a kingpin lock, I have a good kingpin lock but have never used it even once. I dont leave my trailers unattended for anything. -
Even though nobody is logged in, hub miles are still recorded. When the driver logs back in, it's recorded as an anomaly, not a violation (because the driver of the hub miles can't be identified by the computer). However it will be apparent to Safety who was driving since the unit is associated with the truck, and if they want to they will address the "anomaly". And that's IF they find out about anomalies automatically (I don't know if there's an auto alert like there is with a violation but I would guess there is) and they bother to do anything about them.
I would think as long a driver didn't abuse this "feature" by doing it a lot, or for long distances, he'd stay out of trouble, but he's still taking a chance. Not to mention how unlucky you'd be if you pulled in somewhere and DOT decided to check your E log at that point, and you're not logged in or you log in really quick, only to show the last time you drove was 10 minutes ago. -
Tell your FM that your DriverTech, Qualcomm, PeopleNet is giving you trouble then unplug it whenever you need to travel. If they bring up that they couldn't reach you thru it then respond with "I've been telling you .. this hasn't been working right".

Of course a grown man does not need to ask if it is legal for him to go eat... but has a grown man he does need to be responsible.. a company driver does not drive their own truck.. they drive the company truck assigned to them,... whether it is legal, within company policy and wise to drop the trailer and bobtail to a place to eat is a different issue... if it is against his companies policy to do so then he has the freedom to quit and work somewhere else, for another company that allows driver to drop trailers at a truck stop and leave...
I am a company driver, and I understand that as a company driver there are things an O/O can do that I cannot... I also understand the O/O carries more responsibility than I do as a company driver, paying for their fuel for one.. so, where an O/O may be able to use the extra fuel to get to a restaurant of their choosing because they are paying for the fuel.. a company drivers do not pay for the fuel, the company does.. 5 miles for one driver may not be much, but 100 drivers driving 5 miles to a waffle house adds up... -
I like walking too but not if im parked for the night.I'll eat at a truckstop and like it like 8thnote said, lol.Far as taking a cab,to a waffle house?Rather take it to an outback.
