I found a western star 500 Detroit 13speed. 1.5million miles has apu. Pulled for landstar. Guys selling for medical reasons. Will I get hurt? New clutch and rebuild motor 2 times 400,000 on last rebuild.

here something to think about, 1.5 mil, rebuilt twice, last time was 400,000, That means about every 500,000 the engine has been rebuilt, I'd would like to know why? I know guys with that same engine, with about as many miles and still havent had to have it re-built, I would walk away

Thanks. The guy was in tears after driving 35years having to quit. Ill ask him why it was twice. I love series 60s and 13speeds. Im 24 going on my 6th year driving. Trying to find a good start.

Get an oil sample and if it isn't screaming for another rebuild immediately, by all means I say go for it. Even if you drive it for a year or two you will be ahead and at that time can look for something in a higher/newer range. If the frame is in good shape, you could always drop another crate engine in it. Can't beat old trucks.

I was thinking oil sample. Where can I take a sample to and how much? I got a freightliner shop 15miles away.

If you dont know this man on a personally, dont let fealings get in the way, Having been re-built twice with that many miles should be a red flag, Having a older truck is nice, but not if its gooing to be a money pit

I would want samples ran on oil, trans, and rears but for $10K with apu I would be very tempted if it was me. I might even dyno it before buying.

Have YOUR trusted mechanic give you his professional opinion on mechanical fitness, have a very good look over the frame for rust, check rear ends for rust holes, look for things that look like they are ready to break soon ... as for the oil sample, your mechanic probably has a kit consisting of a small bottle and he will probably know where you can take it and they will either do it there or mail it to a place that has the machine, cost (in Canada) is about $20. Probably less in the USA.
