Another year at it you'll realize that you cannot always rely on a GPS. Hell eventually you'll be able to tell just by the vibe that a certain street isn't for you.. and you were nervous and stressing it then started to rush it losing track of your tractor. IMO

Well put, relying on the GPS wasn't the OP fatal mistake....backing up blind and guessing your not going to hit somebody is how he got ticketed, and rightfully so. I'd be po'd if that was my new vehicle he hit being careless and lazy.

Your doing it wrong. Don't let other people make your mistakes. They aren't the ones that will suffer from them. You will. These trucking outfits will work you like a Red headed Step-child. As long as you let them take advantage of you they will. Look where it's got you already. Don't get mad get smart.

When I did my month of training I had to do trip planning I know how to do it. Believe me I will from now on even if I have to do live unloads time and time again and sit for 5 hours. My DM was giving me an earful about me not driving with urgency. I guess it's hard to understand unless your living it with these OTR companies.. Even if I hammer down don't stop at all and just turn my navigation on and go.. I still get to my destinations late half of the time, and have to do live lumpers and get an earful from my dispatch manager's.

That's the problem with companies, theyre quick to tell you how it done but they're not out there.I bet a lot of drivers at your company have trouble finding the customer and end up in a bad situation all because you all solely depend on the gps to get you there.A good driver always has A back up plan.Start planning your routes and study it.Write it down. You need to keep your eyes focused on your surroundings. How u going to be able to do that if you're looking at your gps every few seconds.

What do you mean you don't have time to look at an atlas. That's part of your job.Do you not even carry an atlas in your truck?I would ask you how do you get anywhere without getting lost but you've already done that. What's done is done but I have a feeling there's going to be a lot more times you end up even in a worse situation before you finally learn.Did you know a lot of drivers hit low bridges because they depend on their GPS?Whats really scarey is most the new drivers follow your lead.

Ask Western why they don't have a macro for drivers directions to the customer?Alot of carriers have a mac just for directions and some are from drivers who has been there.Buck you really need to start focusing on your job better then what you're doing if you wanna be a truck driver.Big part of that job is trip planning which means looking at the Atlas, studying your route before you start out.OK my lecturing is done for now, lol.

This thread has nothing to do with an atlas. He got into trouble in town.....in the perverbial "last mile". An atlas is useless for that.

He already said he learned from it and he knows what he should have done and what he should do in the future. We have all made those types of mistakes.
