I'm 21 living in Michigan and I'm looking to get my cdl and start driving truck. I think my best bet would be to get hooked up with a company that will pay for my cdl training versus going to a cdl training school.my dad has driven truck for 15+ years and he gave me some names of companies;Schneider, swift, jb hunt. I was wondering if there where anymore companies that you guys would recommend that I look into. Thanks.

Millis Transfer, Watkins Shepard, and Roehl are good outfits. Avoid CR England, CRST, and JB Hunt. Especially CRE!

Watkins and Shepard won't pay for your school but if you go through an approved school we may be able to put you on. We have a Terminal in Taylor so you would want to live near there since we like the trucks at the terminals when you take time off so we can get them to the shop.
You can call recruiting at 800-548-8895 and ask for Dawn.

I got with a school that paid for your cdl that was sponsored through PAM & USA Truck. They sent me to Fort Wayne, IN (originally from Chicago) and in three weeks I got my license and started trucking with USA

Watkins-Shepard is one of the best if you can arrange a private or community college CDL school.

    Millis Tranfer
    Midwest-Coast Transport
    Roehl Transport
    Central Refrigerated/Swift

Millis transfer is is a transition. They are cutting the experienced trainers and putting new trainers in place, driver facing cameras are coming very soon for all trucks as well as required fueling and routing. I drive for Millis now and am counting the days to my year is up. You can ignore most of the posts you read about Millis older than 5 or 6 months.

I would look at Prime and Roehl as well. If you can afford to go the private route:

    Watkins Shepard
    Schneider
    May Trucking
    J and R Shugel
    Crete/Shaffer
    HO Wolding

Con-way Truckload has a deal with a driving school in Sterling Heights I believe. Knight just opened a driving school in Memphis, TN. Check with one or both of them.

They considered doing that at Maverick while I was working there. They assembled a panel of their oldest and longest term drivers to ask them what they thought of cameras in the trucks.

Those drivers proceeded to tell the owner and the VPs, in rather graphic detail, what things they would have the pleasure of watching on a daily basis if they were to put cameras in the trucks.

The idea was cancelled the next day, right after the morning officer meeting.

    TexTrucker and road_runner Thank this.
