That would be where the term unskilled labor really pertains in this discussion

I hate to say this but it is childish. Would you be apprehensive to tell them you are going to be a kindergarten teacher or a pastry chef? It is the job of parents to teach you to be a man and an eagle. Now go fly, figuratively speaking.

There is a number of skiller labor jobs out there with duds filling the positions. They also fail or quit and hopefully its before they cause an accident or wreck something expensive in whatever it is they do. Just because these people BSd there way through an interview doesnt mean the job requires no skill. Sooner or later it catches up.

Can you rephrase that for accuracy/relevance to "skill"...? A "clean" driving record is not required, the license isn't that "special", and everyone has "rules".

You want to compare skill requirements to stand over a grill or cash register to driving a truck?

Actually, the unskilled rating works in drivers' favor. If truck driving was classified skilled labor employers could sponsor and import 3rd world immigrants to do it for pennies on the dollar and get 0 bellyaching to boot.

Holding a steering wheel and calling your self a "truck driver" might be a job, but their IS some skill involved. IF you have to learn to do it, then it is a skill.

Owning your own truck and running it like the business it is, is a skill for a professional ... hence "Professional Driver", who obviously is making it a career. Just because you don't own the truck, doesn't mean you can't run it like you do and act like a Professional doing it.

There are 1000's of guy's that might hold a CDL, but are they actually professional at anything?

If my son came and said he wanted to be a truck driver I would have no problems with it. If he came and said he wanted to be a rodeo clown, I would have no problem with it. If he lived his life at a job he hated and was miserable doing said job, then I would have a problem with his job, CEO of a fortune 500 company or whatever.

My advice, tell your parent's you want to be a Truck Driver and then make yourself into a Professional. It maybe a "job", it maybe a "career" that is up to you to decide. You should have pride in what you do. As my Mom used to say, " You can have pride in your house be it a shack or a mansion, if it's clean and well cared for". At the end of the day, if you can hold your head up high and be proud to be driving a truck, then it really doesn't matter what anyone else think's.

My Momma was a breakfast cook and she would tell you so. Not a chef, a cook, plain simple hearty well cooked food. She had a following, when she left one restaurant to go to another ( pay issue), she took alot of customers with her. That candy apple maroon 61 t-bird she drove was easy to spot.

Exactly right tinytim...It's called being a professional , and choosing to be proactive instead of reactive , those of us that take pride in what being a safe , courteous and , professional driver know what that means. Hopefully the OP takes the right lesson from this. gpsman you're entitled to have your opinion , but I think you find more tend to dis-agree with you than those that will agree. Sure you can teach a person to drive a truck , but , the correct attitude , along with a great deal patience and experience are the things that make a driver.......

Special or not you still need to have it and it isn't very easy to just jump in a truck and pass the test, you need training. Can you name any other unskilled labor field that has as many rules, regulations, and requirements? To work at McDonald's do you need to pass a certification exam and obtain a license in food handling, grill operation, and food preparation?

Well yeah, because according to the government they are both unskilled positions.
