How can a new guy avoid the NE?

    if it is any help, the motto for a tourist to Maine is "Leave all your money at the first cash box and leave" however when it come's to a Truck Driver it's when you leave that can be the problem with the Kittery Weigh Station.

    seriously though the NorthEast isn't that bad. As it has been pointed out Expressway's are for truck's Parkways are for car's so stay off the Parkway's (around the NYC area Parkways have bridge's that are less then 12')

    Another big mistake that a new driver can make is using Google or Yahoo maps to plan a route, these don't look for truck route's and don't care if there is a low bridge in the way. Calling the shipper/reciever for direction's is the best bet!

    Don't expect anyone in the state of New York to see your blinker. Ever. Also, don't expect them to use it. Don't question why you're at the 50 mile marker and there's an exit 12 when exit 60 is further west of you.

    (these aren't actual numbers, but they do resemble the nightmare. It kind of sucks when your fuel instructions have an exit number in the 60 range and you're in the 100-mile range seeing an exit 15)

    Roehl has a yard in Newport,MN on the south side of the cities. I think they offer a midwest regional fleet out of that area. worst you would have to deal with is Chicago.

    I was actually in the newport yard the other day and must say it's one of the nicer drop yards (not terminals) we have. As for Chicago being the worst he'd have to deal with... I think the twin cities would be the worst. I have to go through Chicago pretty regularly--not a problem. The twin cities with their 100-feet weaving 25-MPH ramps? Also, if you do go midwest regional, I think only 80% of your runs have to be within your region. You will likely see the NE, but it really isn't that bad with proper planning.

    Swift has comfort zones tha drivers can select. The north central covers from East Wy to Oh, Canada to Ar. You may go 100 miles outside of this area but they are pretty good at keping you in your zone. I ran 48 with them and rarely was sent to the ne.

    in my first week out of training they sent me to eastern PA and then right in to the pit in to jersey. you gotta learn sometime man, dont be scared, ya cant live forever :biggrin_25522:

    Starting as a new driver is the time to drive NJ, if you run there, you can run about anywhere. Missing signs, noplace to park, not near enough jug handles. A good rule of thumb for NJ, know where you are going, if you don't, find out before you get there. Atlanta, very much like NJ.
