Yup, Waco almost always blows. That is the one place I probably would refuse a load if I could -- unless I had a decent preplan. Sometimes you can get like a dog food d&h in waco, pu a 2stopper delivering near houston, & then get a nice bulk chemical load with some legs... But too often you end up sitting 24-32 hours at the Waco J or peelot (and you are of course bobtail so you can't get anything from another customer).

At today's national fuel price (4.017) the pay with fsc is 1.35-1.38 solo and 1.36-1.46 team (the variance is because solos who run more than 11,000 miles in a month get an extra 3cpm. Teams that exceed 18,000 miles/month get an extra 8cpm). That is for all dispatched miles, empty & loaded.

For reference, Con-way truckload's average revenue per loaded mile was 1.60 as of dec 13 (not sure if that includes fuel surcharge though).

 

i was refering to $1.40 solo as in like adding the extra stops and detention pay Lolz then dividing your gross pay by the miles you ran

 

Got a chance to speak to a current IC in depth and have some answers:

it is an older version, & you do have to return it if you leave. Unsure whether you will get upgraded to the newer versions for free or have to pay all over again.

You get 75% of what conway collects. That could be $75/hour or zero. This IC had always collected something.

this driver only had one layover and collected $120 for the day.

Yes, included. Even the "pay by mail" Texas toll roads.

All the same as company driver . You even get free XM radio.

No safety bonus, but if you run more than 11,000 miles solo you get a 3cpm bonus paid for all 11,000+ miles. 8cpm and 18,000 miles team.

If you purchase through con-way's leasing partner, they deduct additional amounts for atbs bookkeeping and for a "deposit" for your balloon payment. Conway pays plates & permits. You cover heavy use tax.


Other info: fuel may not be cheapest at terminals -- it depends on what the rate was when the tanker delivered it. You can call the fuel department and tell them your route & they'll tell you where fuel is cheapest.

PM's are like $135 in Joplin, other labor is $55/hour.

Overall he is happy and wishes he did it sooner (drove company for 5 years). I haven't talked to any unhappy ICs

 

I came across your post. Since it is from 2013, I was wondering if you're still O/O with Conway TL and how it's going for you?

 

I leased on with Conway Truckload last July 1. So far, all good. I average about 10K/miles/month, but I have to be home more than some drivers. I have 3 properties, a wife and other life activities that need my attention. If I was younger, without a family, I'd live in my truck, get a room once in a while, and keep all the money. At this time, I use ATBS, the bookkeeping service Conway recommended. I'm OK with them. But my first full year as an independent will probably put me over $70K annual net income based on Q1 numbers, a nasty tax bracket of 32%. So, I think that's pretty good, since my company driver income was around $55K gross, not net, income. Leasing on with Conway just about doubled my take-home dollars. I bought an '08 Freightliner from Lonestar/Freightliner. It's been running good, haven't missed a mile, gets around 7mph overall, to protect the $5-$6K/month I spend for fuel. At least it's deductible, but the money I get on my fuel surcharge is taxable as earned income, which sure shrinks that down. Anyway, leasing on to Conway is certainly working for me.

I can imagine you get a steady feed of CWF & UPS ...think they like O/O on the just in time freight !
