Every truck I've rode/drove had the stock exhaust and I could barely hear it. I usually hear 'em on Dump trucks
Shifting with Jake brakes on.

I feel I am also more of a man when I jake! I am sorry but I can't get over how much I love to hear the jakes on my unmuffled straight pipes! I don't jake in truck stops (unless I forget to turn them off), in towns but anywhere else I jake! It does save me money on brakes when I jake to a stop the less I push that brake pedal the longer those brake linings last. I used to drive a freightliner classic with mufflers and a detroit motor that had louder jakes then my current pete with straight pipes and a 425 cat.
I belive it is harder when "jake shifting" on your truck. -
the cat has a pretty quiet engine brake. My big cam is probably louder through mufflers than yours is by a long shot and an unmuffled big cam will split your ear drums. It's a swet sweet sound but it's just not feasable to run like that these days. I'll be running straight on my pete but I'll put a small muffler underneath (not too much of one though, lol)

I was actually shocked on how quiet it was with straight pipes! i wish it was a little bit louder. I was looking at a 86? pete with a big cam cummins in it with 7" straights and it scared the crap out of me when I hit the jakes! -
it will make ya jump wont it. love that sound

Ahh, the "No Jake Brake" signs... gotta love 'em. For the most part, I play nice and shut mine off in residential areas. However, if you were stupid enough to build your McMansion on a US highway (US 280 in Birmingham anyone?), then I'm likely to let 'er rip just out of spite. What kind of retard builds a house on a truck route and then expects the truck to conform to their rules? A lot of them I guess, because I see new McMansions popping up alongside designated truck routes everywhere. I have no sympathy for you... build your little gated community where the trucks don't run.

the one that always stick in my mind is Park City Utah where you are coming DOWN A MOUNTAIN and they have no engine brake signs because the house are all RIGHT next to the freeway. that's a good sized hill too!.
I must admitt I hammer the jakes every time I see one of those signs -
our jakes are set so they dont go off below a certain MPH i guess. mine stays on always but never kicks in at a T/S
