I'm from Ont every company I've worked for has a slip that relieves me from duty after 1/2 hour at customer. Not saying it's right or that it will stand up in court but it's standard operating procedure. Myself if I'm working 20 hours a day I have NO problem falling asleep any time I have a chance. One thing you could do is if you are in a dock for say 6 hours just don't leave the premises until your full ten hours are up. Then your legal to go and that will be a hint to them.

Thanks for all of your input and advice guys it's much appreciated. I would just like to add that I am aware of fellow colleagues who came here to make as much money as possible and are quite happy to work in this way, that is their choice and I'm not criticizing them in any way. Myself however did not emigrate 6000 miles to run illegally, I brought my young family here to start a new life and we can live more than comfortably by earning a legal wage. It is always going to be a sore point and at some point I would guess that most people have used the hours of service to their own advantage but for it to be used as a substitute for planning the job correctly I find unacceptable.

If you want to put them to the test, call a cab and leave the property after 1/2 hour. Go to a restaurant, shopping mall, etc. Let the customer call your company because they're done unloading and you're nowhere to be found. "Oh, I went off duty 1/2 hour after I arrived, just like you said."

See how long that policy stays in effect after that :)
