What OS do you have on your laptop?
I have the S3, and I didn't need to enter my MAC address. Just Configure the hotspot with WPA2 PSK security and enter a password. You can leave the network SSID as it is, or change it to something else, really doesn't matter.
Then turn on the hotspot, connect to the SSID that shows up in your computer's wifi client, enter the password, and you're online. -

Youtube is your friend in this case:

Shouldn't need your MAC address. In the settings for the hotspot you should select the password needed for a computer to connect to your phone. When you search from your laptop, you should see your phone name, click on it, and it will ask for the password. Type it in and, you're connected.

Wow okay let me check all this out.. I did put in the pass word that my phone said to and my laptop said it couldn't connect to this network??

open up your hotspot app, click on the configure tab. scroll down on the screen that pops up. look for the box that says SHOW PASSWORD. make sure that's what youi putting in when the laptop asks you to connect to your device. EXACTLY as it is programmed into the phone. that means cap letters are cap. little letters are little. and include any signs. also make sure it's WPA2 PSK security encryption.
if you try to change your own password. chances are it probably won't work with the encryption. i used to have my own password with encryption. but that hasn't worked with the last 2 phones. i've had to just settle with how's it already set.
you can also try the foxfi tether app. downloaded from the play store. works the same way as the stock hotspot app.
if that don't work. do a google for android forums. there are 3 very popular forums that SOMEONE will have an answer pretty quickly.cowboy_tech and chalupa Thank this. -
