What is the difference in today's drivers, and yesterday's drivers?

    Why does it matter to any of us whose butt you kiss. That gets you no where as a rule. Dedication, safe miles, and alot less whining will carry you farther

    Wow.....why would I want you to do that Brandson....I have absolutely no reason to either care about what you do , or how you do it. But after a lifetime of experience driving , I do have a fairly decent grip on the industry , and what it takes to not only be a successful driver (read get and hold for over 30 years a really good job) , but to be a safe one. I was merely trying to explain to you , that sometimes you have to make folks do what their supposed to do , or put into place the actions for their superiors to make them do so. You said that 2 of your trainers were bad ones , well it happens. But before jumping ship at the 1st job , my question to you is , why didn't you either confront the trainer in question ( like you're doing with me now ) , explain to him that you wanted to learn the right way. If he wasn't able to , or didn't care to train you in the proper way , you should've told him that you were requesting another trainer. Easy fix. I sincerely apologize for ruffling your feathers , wasn't my intention at all. Like I said I was only trying to give you advice that I really thought would help...But , you do as you see fit my friend , like I said I got no skin in this game. Only thing I'm really concerned with is getting a turkey to come to my calling on Sat.

    todays drivers are docile and parrots of their safety manager

    yesterdays drivers were extensions of their dispatcher, if that meant driving 24hrs straight, you do it

    there was comraderie, but there were also cars and trucks put in the ditch

    remember why the CB became popular, 55mph govt mandate on triple digit trucks

    penalties were lighter, guys had 4 or five cdls

    and society has changed

    insatant communication, nationwide road aervice

    no more pay phones

    we dont NEED each other anymore

    You may have a good idea on the industry, but when was the last time you dealt with some of the trainers that are prevalent at the megas?

    Never had to (my uncle taught me to drive as teen in the mid-60's)....I was a very fortunate guy..after coming home from the war , I only had 1 trucking job before landing the one I stayed at for over 30 years. Still that doesn't mean I know what the difference in good vs "bad" trainers.....

    I think it shows that you are way off as to how the trainers are just from your experience and exposure. Competent and capable trainers are few and far in the megas. Most of them are just using the trainee as a source of additional driving income and offer no "quality" training. My trainer showed me how to back in docks by him doing it while I was asleep. He also drove while I slept. He slept when I drove after the first 4 hours. Thankfully I only spent 2 days with a trainer.

    And that last sentence explains it all. After your seemingly long and distinguished trucking career , you claim you know so much more than someone that's been in the industry for decades. You and Bradson need to start your own truck driving academy. I respect the fact that you are a medic/EMT , and would'nt dream of second guessing any opinion you have on that. Why not give a driver with many years more experience the same. Have a good week-end road medic.

    Ordinarily I would've deleted this post. But since you are a new guy with an obvious and enormous chip on your shoulder let me offer a piece of advice. You'll catch more flies with honey then you will with vinegar.

    You won't last long with that attitude, and eventually you will run into someone who may decide to knock that chip off.

    I believe what RM is getting at is the financial interest that the bottom feeders have in getting the new guys "trained" as quick as possible so that the "trainer" is freed up to "train" the next skull full of mush. It's necessary at companies with that kind of turnover.
