What are the pro's / con's of going through trucking school? I'm into my 3rd week of actual driving on the job. Although I am by no means a pro, I can get from point A to B with relative ease. (point A being usually somewhere in Michigan and point B being Los Angeles.) Although I might be too new at this to make any viable generalizations, I would say that trucking school will at least give you the backing skills necessary to survive on the jarb.
So far... just based on my experience, I would say save your money and not go to a trucking school. Get into a truck with a trainer and learn whilst ye' work.
Who needs trucking school.

I was just told there's the truck, it's got a load of corn on it sell 100% to us. That was a twin stick 6 and 4 and a 425 Cat, In a Petebilt, I had 40ft of dump trailer and a tiny little road to get to the grain elevator quick. I was far from legal age but I had to do it, I've learned everything from the school of hard knocks and if works for me.
Skydivedavec, passingthru69, Highway Hypnosis and 1 other person Thank this. -
Most trainers, at most companies, suck. And there's no splitting hairs about that. Mine was literally, a coke head.
Did you trade a work contract for training?Highway Hypnosis Thanks this. -
No contract; just applied for the job. Although I've had a class A license for years, I have had virtually 0 hours of driving a 18 wheeler. So.. I have to go through this companies 240hr. training program. I drive at nights, my instructor drives during the day. We run to cali and back to MI. It's a pretty smooth operation... he makes money, I get training.

Hey twinstickpeterbuilt... I just noticed you're from Henderson, KY.. I used to live in Evansville, IN and work at the Tyson plant out in Robards, KY where I worked on a fleet of poop-covered MAC trucks as an up and coming diesel tech. That area in KY was the mental imagery that was going through my head as you were describing having to get to a grain elevator.

Well, you are going through a trucking school that's 240 hours.
It's extremely rare for a company to hire an inexperienced driver these days without requiring some type of formal training. If there's an accident the company has a lot of explaining to do in court as to why they have someone driving their equipment with no formal training. In this situation, the company loses and better settle out of court instead of a jury trial.Highway Hypnosis and Skydivedavec Thank this. -

Ive payed 3 trucks off thanks to Tyson. Pulled into that elevator for years. Last time I was there was back in August. Check your PM's.Highway Hypnosis Thanks this. -
This guy has become quite the star. This same video has been posted on here at least 10 times. If I didn't see the video I wouldn't have believe how stupid of a careless mistake this was.USA should have charged the driver for repairs.Instead of just stopping getting out and observe the situation,he only made matters much worse.
