I'm a new driver, fresh out of school with my CDL w/tanker & Hazmat, doubles & triples endorsements), Army veteran so want a company that offers the Veteran apprenticeship program to take advantage of my GI Bill benefits. Home base is SW Ohio. Want to make great money ($1000/week), have good home time (at least 2 days a week or something like Roehl's 7/3, 7/4) and good benefits (health insurance, vacation, etc). Willing to do flatbed, hazmat, tanker, touch freight, whatever, as long as I can make the money. The more miles, the better. I do not have a passport so no Canada. I'm not afraid of hard physical labor, been doing it my whole life. My father is a trucker, I'm familiar with the lifestyle, not afraid to get my hands dirty.
I've got pre hire offers from TMC & Roehl but just wondered if there were any other companies with better pay, miles, etc. I've been pouring over the posts on Roehl and TMC and am leery of both companies at this point, as they both seem to have their issues (TMC doesn't have great home time and Roehl doesn't have great miles/money). I realize no company is going to be perfect and I may end up starting at one of these 2 just to get the experience in before finding a better position. But figured I'd ask those who have been in the business and know.
Go!
Thanks for any feedback.
Best company to work for in Ohio?

Millis Transfer has a terminal down in Trenton, im not sure if they have an OJT program, NBT has a yard in Troy, they have a Meijer dedicated account, and they have a OJT program, Im told their drivers get home weekly but can stay out longer. Melton Truck Lines has an OJT program and has a yard outside Youngstown, hometime is 2 weeks gets you 2 days. Ive looked into all of these, and the only ones that seem to be getting back to me and checking on me is Elizabeth from Melton, and Brad from TMC. The others havent called to check in with me in 3 weeks. Im pretty set on going with Melton. My wife is ok with me being out for 3 weeks straight if I want to or longer. I personally dont want to drive box yet, I want to get into flatbed which is the other reason why I am going with Melton. Im not scheduled to start CDL school till May 5, but Melton has already done my background check, and did my employment check, has said the rest of the paperwork will be done once im about a month from graduation.
also Clopay Garage Doors has their main facility in Troy right off I75. Im told that their drivers are paid exceptionally well with high milage pay, and unloading pay of $75 per unload, with several unloads per truck. Its very hard work, but if you arent afraid to work, then there ya go. They do require a minimum amount of experience, of 40,000 miles across 2 states, as well as others.Last edited: Apr 15, 2014

Having hauled driver unload Clopay garage door loads for Zumstein Inc. out of Lewisburg, OH I can tell you those loads are more than hard work especially for only $75. Try southern Georgia in the middle of summer, 100+ degrees in the trailer, door panels and all the parts flat loaded on the floor, no pallets with only one guy, sometimes, but rarely two, helping out and then being expected to go get the next load AND being expected to make delivery the next morning usually 500-800 miles away.

Thank you! I've got an app in with clopay but just need to get some miles. Would love to just start and stay with them-- I have a friend who works for them and says he'll never leave and he's been trucking a long time--- but am going to need some experience first I guess.

I'd love to get on with Clopay-- I was a roofer for 25 years so heat, cold, rain, nothing bothers me, especially when the pay is right.
