Well, last ditch options are just that, last ditch. But every month that goes by when more thousands of trucks hit the roads, the off-ramp option becomes more and more of a real necessity. And yes, I get sick and tied of those who say "you should have trip planned", these morons who either don't truck in the real world of reefer draggers and others who HAVE to shut down after 20:00 or who haven't been out here long enough to need to shave, trying to put forth the notion "trip planning" will somehow make spots become available at 23:00 outside of New Jersey. And these are the last I need a lecture from.

stuka I use to run nights a lot. You can circle the truck stop and someone will usually pullout by the 3rd or 4th lap. Look for someone with the cab light filling out the logbook or even ask on the CB "Is anyone fixing to leave"? Sometimes you'll get a reply and they'll even hold the spot until you get back around.

Another trick is find an industrial area. Many of the side roads are trucker friendly or you might find an empty warehouse. How many times have you slept at a customer and got up and delivered? Sneak in a business with no guard shack and park with the other truckers. I've done that before. One time I got woke up by a guy asking for my bills. I said I don't deliver until 0900. He said okay, lol.

Then you can do the on ramp thing in some states. Look for other trucks parking to be sure. Try to park with other trucks and not by yourself. Safety in numbers.

Another trick if you anywhere near a casino most are truck friendly. Anytime I was in St Louis I would stop at the Ameristar Casino. Great parking lot and great food. You don't have to gamble.

Scope it out first on Google Earth but many Waffle Houses have truck parking you can sneak in and sleep.

If you get real desperate sneak behind a shopping center. Out of site out of mind. Use some common sense where you park. If a cop drives by many think you are sleeping and waiting to deliver.

The more experience you get the better you will get at trip planning. Learn to manage your time and plan your whole day including your stops. Then you won't find yourself in a pickle as much.

Lot of good info, thanks, People. I agree, trip planning is vital, and is something I am learning as I go, and I am learning what to expect. It's a big shift for a guy who has been driving cars and motorcycles for 40 years, and now has to retrain his brain to drive a semi safely and successfully. On the topic of respect, I do respect other drivers, young and old. I've met a great many thoughtful and supportive experienced drivers in the last month. I hope to be able to return the favor as I learn more.

I used to enjoy parking at K-Mart at night......

Its quiet,Nobody there and it was nice and old-fashioned Dock area in Back.(The Kind I like)

Since I Dont shop (And never will) Wal-Mart..I Wont even think about parking there either

I Like K-Mart because theire Lots are Smaller and should I say personal...

"K-Mart is your savings place, Where your dollar buys you more"

Someone please post that older commercial

Other than that.......Strip Malls are 50/50 with risk of being in the way...

How about Parking where cars park??

Hey, i'll give someoine with Balls $100 to go EAST on interstate 78 into New Jersey after 9pm and get off hmm Lets say somewhere around the Brunswick-Newark Area and just Ghost it out..

What I mean by that is take an exit without knowing where your at..Find a Quiet street to Pull down on and just PARK IT there...For the Night

You mean this? "Kmart is your saving place...REMMINGTON ELECTRIC SHAVERS THE SIZE OF TOASTERS OUT OF GOD ###### NO-WHERE!"

K-Mart/Sears deserves to go out of business the way they handle customers. The only people shopping at sears are 50/60+ paying major markup. They push that stupid ### membership card like it was the last thing on the planet.

BTW, OP- you might try malls in general. Most of them are deserted in this day and age, because malls are now obsolete. Malls are in/near most major Metros and parking in the back is pretty safe.

If we keep derailing this thread, we're going to get spanked, and my ### is already chapped from having to see my family tomorrow.

OP, Wally worlds are a great place to park assuming you're not sitting at one that will tow you for doing so. Call the Walmart, and ask to speak with a manager. Ask if big trucks are allowed to park on the property prior to parking.

When I park at a truck stop and I have a choice where to park, I always aim for the spot that will least likely be blocked by some numbskull too lazy or tired to park it in a legit spot. I try to stay away from the being near the fuel islands, scale, or the main aisle where all the traffic rolls down.

Obscure places I've parked, industrial parks on the street, on the lots of empty warehouses (usually there'll be a for sale sign), companies I'm not picking up/delivering (but been there before), gas stations with parking for a few trucks (usually one or two in some towns).
