    Good day All,

Recently, I have had a rash of missed appointments by drivers. I don't think folks take into account the damage this does with Brokers, Shippers and Receivers. My question is what methods have you all found successful in motivating drivers to be on-time? I'm building my business model on Customer Service and would like to be able to promise our customers an on-time rate of no less than 98%. However, the fact of the matter is its not in my control because I am not the one behind the wheel. Now I do take into account that there are a lot of variables out there (weather, traffic, breakdowns). I'm not talking about those instances. In most if not all cases I can pinpoint the tardiness to piss-poor planning and dragging arse! I've got to find a way to get my drivers and O/O's to buy into getting to our appointments ON TIME! Any ideas here would certainly help!

Now lets make a few things clear:
    1. I do not condone speeding or operating out of service hours
    2. I have learned the hard way not to schedule appointments too close together
    3. Firing a driver is not always the answer because some of my "offenders" are really great drivers "most" of the time. However, I'm looking for better than most of the time here.

How much window time do you give the drivers? Also if there's no reason for them being late then start charging the drivers for every late load. That'll wake them up real quick.

    Skateboardman,

That's an excellent idea and already in the works. Going out with several drivers over the next few weeks starting next week.

Patty, Today a driver had 4 hours to go 200 miles with no known traffic delays and was 2 hours late!

What was the excuse? Someone who arrives late with no communication is not what I'd call a really great driver - no matter how infrequent. Then again I don't have any employees.

If disciplinary action is out, perhaps a performance bonus to act as a carrot?

Hmm, how about you take a look at shippers and receivers and make sure they load and unload in less then 30 min. It can be done in 15. You are putting limits on drivers what and how they should do their job, take a look in the mirror and and start with yourself. I f$#@&% hate ELD and don't have one at this point, but you know what, just because of stuff like this I'm going to love them. Keep me on dock for a while and if my hours run out I'm NOT moving my ##### from your dock.
