I set my cruise control to the posted speed and my troubles are few. I also try to keep my truck clean, lights working and load securement looking good. Never give them a reason to pull you over.
What is the Max speed limit you can go over on an interstate?

I drove from Memphis to Dallas today. Speed limit in Texas was 75 for a lot of the way. My truck is governed at 69. Only 3 trucks passed me. I passed many.
I usually just run right at the limit when it's 55, 60 or 65. Usually try to set cruise just below the governed speed so I have a little extra if I need it in a 70mph.
That 5-10 over thing might go with cars but I have read people on here get tickets for just a few mph over. For me, As a new driver there is just too many other things to pay attention to other than the speedometer and cop lookout.... -

To all you new drivers. If you have to worry about how much over the speed limit you can run you need to flip burgers.
That is the least of your problems. Any one tells you you can run safely over the speed is lying to you and not a pro. It is YOUR decision only.
The posted limit is there for safety. Every ones safety. Many do speed but that is breaking the law and any one that says breaking the law is OK , well they just don't know what they are talking about. Just because they haven't gotten a ticket does not mean it is OK. It matters not what state.
I personally know of troopers that will and do pull trucks over for 1 to 5 mile over the posted limit. One purpose is to give them a reason to stop you and that gives them the right they need to inspect your vehicle and paper work.
By the way, One thing far too many don't know or remember is if there is EOBR or company GPS on the truck your being recorded by the company through them and constant or far to frequent speeding can give them reason to terminate you with out prior notice. Usually 1 warning is all you get if that.. it shows your UNSAFE by their standards and company policy you know about. They will state it is for insurance reasons.
companies without EOBR will have the ECM checked when truck is pulled for service at the terminal so You really aren't safe speeding just because there is no recording device you can see.
I guarantee it is going to be tough as a new driver with less than 2 years under your belt to find a good driving job with a first class company for being terminated for excess speeding.. They do not have to state how fast over the posted limit. So if you are constantly over by 5 mph and get canned. Then Thank the EXPERIENCED driver telling you it is OK.
If you gave up a job to drive a truck because you did not like someone looking over your shoulder and bosses on your case you go back to that job.
In trucking every one that sees you, comes in contact with you is your boss. Your dispatcher, every one we share the road with, shippers, receivers , waitress's, other truck drivers. They are all your boss. All have some control in some way over you. Phone calls, letters to the company, Articles written the driver your tailgating to legislators about how you do your job. We never see every one that can effect our jobs.
Just do your job the right way and you have nothing to worry about.
Good luck drivers, do it right and you will succeed. Never stop learning and being observant.SlowPoke44magnum, ncmickey, Lux Prometheus and 1 other person Thank this. -
edited to add that those that i personally know that have been pulled over for 1-6 mph over WERE NOT WEARING THEIR SEATBELTS and the cop said that is why they pulled them over then added the speeding charge. contemplate that you goody two shoes.my seatbelt is always on and i drive at least 5 over(when possible-times are traffic will not allow) except in construction(less than <then) and thru small cities and known speed traps. i suppose that the majority that can't, preach against and it has always been that way. some things never change. I consider myself a safe driver and my record backs it up.
keep right except to pass.Last edited: Apr 28, 2014
