    Hey guys,

I'm 27 years old, single, no kids, no house, no ties to anything, so I figured I might as well give trucking a shot.

I am starting a truck driving school soon to get my CDL, and it isn't through any specific company so I won't be indentured to any company when I start.

I am located in Michigan, about an hour outside of Detroit and would ideally like to get an OTR spot hauling Dry van loads. I have no problem being out weeks at a time seeing as I don't have anything better to do anyway.

My last job was stocking shelves in a grocery store where I made about $250/week take home, or about 13,500 a year, so I am thinking that the money might seem pretty good no matter where I go.

I have my potential company list narrowed down to a few choices. I understand it is a "pick your poison" type situation, but just wondering if anybody had any thoughts about these particular companies based on my info.

-Schneider - I've heard pretty good stuff about them
-Roehl - Also heard pretty good things
-Crete - Heard their trucks are junky, but the stuff they promise looks ok.
-Conway - Don't know much about them
-U.S. Xpress - Heard they only have auto-trans trucks (which I do not want)

Those are more or less in order of my first pick to my last pick.

All I want to avoid is a company that is going to force me to go broke right away by not fixing their trucks and not paying downtime. I want to run as many miles as I possibly can, preferably as a team driver to start, and possibly after that too.

Let me know what you guys think about any of these. I know recruiter promises are garbage, I just want to work and make a livable wage for a year until I can switch out to a better company.

    Thanks.

Talk to the people from companies who come into your truck school about their companies. Also does your school also help with finding placement?

Also from what I heard US Express is getting rid of the automatics.

Why not add Schneider bulk to the list? You will make more money and enjoy it better. Don't worry, somebody on here will soon tell you not to drive tank as a new driver but don't listen. Lots and lots of people start in tank.

I worked for us xpress for 2 almost 3 yrs. They are a good starter company. By the time u get to them they should not have too many autoshift trucks left they were getting rid of them when I was there. U can make decent money for them, by decent I mean for just starting. Expect to be in the northeast a lot and bug the he'll out of dispatch to keep u moving. There training program is not the worst or the best.

I did...start in a tank that is....in the trucking world today that seems to be the place to make really good money...I mean in the 60 to 80 k a year range if you get with the right company. FatTone225 , get all of the endorsements that you can while in school....plus a pass-port and a twic card. That will open many doors for you once you are done with school. Also when you get enough posts send Chinatown a pm, he is the go-to guy around here for tanker jobs. He can give much needed , and great advice. good Luck Be safe...keep us posted on your progress...TTTD....

Same position as me, lovely eh..?

First off, off, don't go team, too much of a headache. You'll double your earnings easily without that.
Took home 35k +/- with Watkins my first year and I took between 30-40 days off.
You don't have to stay out months at a time either, just prove to dispatch you're worth a ####.

Which company to pick is honestly up to you, as far as the mega carriers go, they're all pretty much alike. Just do as much research as ya can before you agree to head out for orientation.

    Welcome to the forum.

Good choice, Schneider Bulk. You will make thousands $$$ more a year with tankers.
You will make enough money that you can max out on your 401K contribution and have tons of money when retirement age rolls around.

We drove for Schneider and it is a good company. Ran team with better half. Now that was a few years ago but not much has changed. good equipment, Some ( not all) Great terminals that rival truck stops. good showers TV and clean. They have rules but nothing you can't do easily. As you progress with them you will find that the loads are getting better and you may just be dispatched well ahead of your current load. You can do a lot worse.
