YRC Information for potential driver.

Can be a wonderful place to work long term. Just do a fair days work and be honest. Road or city or dock? On the first day, if there are several people starting, try to punch the clock first as it will start your seniority. Be prepared to give up your nights and weekends for the next several years.

 

I worked for Yellow Transportation from 2004-2010. Was going to be my last job, until the merger with Roadway. They went to the Roadway style of dispatch (hog board), and that sucked. Even after 6 years seniority I was laid off and offered severance, 5 years of Union dues and a month pay based on 80% of gross income for the past year. I accepted and bought my own truck, here I sit.

Line haul is extremely difficult, you will spend a lot of time baby sitting your phone and more than likely on the extra board for a year before you have a whiff of bidding on a job. Benefits are so-so, they certainly aren't what they were when I was there. Drivers have taken concessions over the last few years to keep the company afloat. With that said, be patient and do your time, hopefully they don't take anymore pay cuts.

I hear you brother. I was a 12 year guy in the Philly area. I worked for big R and couldn't work steady after they started closing terminals. I thought that was my job till I retired. My father was able to retire from there in 2003.

 

I see you're Hercules guy. Was 152 your only unit?

 

My Dad retired in '92 from Yellow in DFW after 35 years in various locals. He still draws his pension...

 

Oddly enough Holland has been relatively untouched during this time. Around here they share a terminal with YRC, which been downsized from a major break bulk to an end of line terminal. It's sad, I drive down there every once in a while to take my truck to my favorite shop to get a service or install something I bought on the road that was shiny. I see that place and remember the good ole days..it's a shell of its former self.
