Gerdin's Dream--A Fictionalized, Speculative Parody of a Possible Executive Dream that NEVER HAPPENED and NEVER WILL...

    Part Three--Gerdin's Nightmare Continues

Occasionally Gerdin's wife wanted him to squirm a little bit. She thought it humanized him some, since he had such control over so very many people who work for him and he dealt in such obscenely large amounts of money that most people felt so terrified of him that Godzilla in the room instead of Gerdin might have been a relief.

Plus, when she got him to squirm some she had a chance to deflect the Edward Deming/Jack Welch merry-go-round talk that was her husband's mantra. Deming invented 'just-in-time', a manufacturing practice that put truck drivers like us under the kind of stress we have today: every load has just barely enough time to get there. Gerdin would say that's his game.

Then there's Welch. Welch, famous as CEO of GE, took GE to a new level with a simple concept: every year force every department to identify their bottom 10%-15% performers and let them go. Welch did that from top to bottom every year and pruned GE into a leaner and leaner machine. 'Keep the best, get rid of the rest.' Gerdin would say that's his method.

Put those two concepts together and you have, well, HTLD.

"Well, Mikey," his wife asked, "How do the Gordons feel about you forcing out Gordon's best?"

Suddenly the second segment, the middle segment of Gerdin's dream started to push its way up into Gerdin's consciousness--which could NOT happen. Gerdin felt a little nausea, just a little.

"Sweetheart," said Gerdin, recomposing himself, "both of these guys have found new jobs where they'll fit better and be happier than with us."

"Okay, Darling," said Gerdin's wife, lightly, knowing that she had him.

"But, Darling," continued Gerdin's wife, "Why were you on your hands and knees all begging and pleading??"

Gerdin hated it when he knew who had won and it wasn't him. A little more nausea pushed up...

(Any resemblance to real persons, while perhaps not entirely coincidental, is entirely FICTIONAL.)

Absolutely, yes. LONG LONG runs, especially out of Ben and Jerry's in Vermont to Henderson,NV close to 3,000 and more if you have to take the southern route. My average is around 2,800 right now I think

Bumper, I just noticed your post in the ex-GTI thread and didn't realize that, like Greyhound, you're still with Gordon. That's special, you know, and would be very worthwhile hearing from you on an ongoing basis what has, has not changed since last November.

Your thoughts have added weight because you're still there and no obvious axe to grind.

Victor can you tell us about the miles your getting with Heartland Gordon. I hope you are done with super long boring stories. I think I read the first one and then I skipped over the last two.

I hate to say this, because I still have a lot of positive feelings towards Gordon, but they aint Gordon anymore.

Living in the PNW the change has been slower here, still seeing a few blue trucks pulling HL trailers, but here is the big thing I have noticed.

The quality of Gordon drivers has nosedived. In the past week I have seen a Gordon driver make a U turn across 4 lanes of traffic rather than turn around in the industrial park 20 feet in front of him. Also seen more smurf trucks tailgating and passing others on the right (in 3 lane highways, instead of using the left lane) when the passing lane was open.

I realize this is a small sample size, but my perception is that there is a bad odor coming from HL....
