I've been a local driver for the last 9 years & now am about to go back OTR (48 & Canada) & need a new cell phone, I'm just guessing that Verizon & AT&T would be my best bet for coverage/service but have thought about trying the Smart talk pre paid.

Whats ya'lls thoughts on the service/coverage & bang for the buck ??

I have a Verizon phone, pay $175 per month, I get I think 450 (maybe 900) minutes anytime, anywhere, including Canada, never pay roaming, have unlimited US data, never data roaming, have unlimited hotspot. Only thing it doesn't have it Canadian data. Lots of people say I am overpaying, but for the difficulty I have to find a dead zone, along with the data that pretty well always works, and in the bigger cities the 4g is faster than my home computer, I am happy to keep paying for it. The bill is only ever more than $175 if I talk on the phone excessively, which almost never happens.

I stopped using contract phones after being nickel-and-dimed to death by Spring, and went to prepaid phones until 2009, when I took a chance on Verizon. I've been a satisfied customer ever since. Yeah, their plans are more expensive, but their coverage is so much better, customer service is pretty good... granted, you will find dead zones. Colorado, Wyoming, I'm sure Utah will have some, etc.... but so will every other carrier. If you were just running the east coast, AT&T would be fine... if you're running all 48, I'd highly recommend Verizon.

What network does smart-talk run off off? I only know of straight talk prepaid.

If it is indeed straight talk, they run off the Verizon 3g network.

I went through almost every company. Verizon net's had the best coverage throughout the US.

I have Pageplus now, which runs on the Verizon network. It's pre-pay.

I really like them except for the data cap of 5 gigs and 3g. I got use to the 3g after a while. Not a huge difference in speed I feel. A Verizon contract plan may not have the cap and will give 4g but will cost more. Probably twice the amount if I recall.

Youtube videos and downloads are what really eat up the data of course.

I went through 5 gigs in 2 days one time. Ouch!

Look on ebay for a gadfathered verizon line.. if you're lucky you may find one.
I've had verizon for 4 years now and I pay 145 everything unlimited. I ahave a godfathered line which they no longer offer..

another dead zone is Addison Maine and some parts of Jonesport Maine. The networks are working on it. Roaming charges in the USA should be obsolete (something right that Obama did).

Mind you what I said about roaming fees? I dont believe it applies outside of the USA.

There is a place on the Saint John River (river between Maine and Canada) that a friend went to in his boat. He claims he wasnt 100 feet from shore and his phone rang. The call was for 2 minutes. AT&T soaked him for a roaming fee as they said he was in Canada for $50. So be ware. This happened before the legislation.
