Step One: Join a team that plays the sport you want to play.
If you want to play football, you don't join the KentuckyWildcats. Some companies make you work your way up from the smaller loads to the bigger loads. Some places will stick you in a rig, pat you on the back and set you under a 150000lb load. Mess up at that size, and the fine will be so big that you will have to post bail and put put your home up for collateral to pay the fine.
PERMITS
One day, I was walking through the office when I heard my travel agent frustrated on the phone.
"What's going on?"
"How wide is he?
"Where is he at?"
"UHOH"
"Bring his permits up on your computer, gimme your road atlas and give me the phone."
Nothing against dispatchers, but usually the only people that can make heads or tails of a permit will be another driver or the person that issued it from the state. His route said something to the effect of SR00309, SR00078, SR00081, SR00080.
In the permit, you may see something about some regs stated on some state provision. If you're not familiar with the state regs, do a quick google search. Some permits will say that a certain copy of a certain provision sheet with a particular date must accompany the permit in order for the permit to be valid. Most scale masters and DOT Cops won't bother you, but there's always one that does his homework. What does that mean? It's like a speed cop running the speed limit...he's on the prowl for an unsuspecting victim. If this Cop did his homework, and you didn't do yours as well as he did his, he owns your arse. Wow, and you thought that all we do is hold a steeringwheel and drive slow. Better know that green and white bible as if your life depends on it.
So you want to haul big loads?

HOMEWORK:
You have a load picking up in Black River Falls,Wis going to Boston Mass. Dims are 25L x 13H x 13'10W and it weighs 50k. No tarp. How much do you need to move this load? What do you BEFORE accepting this load? What do you do BEFORE picking this load up?281ric Thanks this. -
Am I the only one confused here?
SHC Thanks this. -
No confusion. Just trying to help the newer guys out.
281ric and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
So 10' wide is a BIG load??? Guess I run super loads then
MartinFromBC, thetinytrucker, Joetro and 1 other person Thank this. -
i've had idaho check my permits to make sure the maps and what not are there.
took a 14 wide out of long beach. cajon only looked at the permit. didn't even care about the accompanying paperwork required by cali for permits. -
black river to boston 1280 miles add 10% out of route miles thats 1410 miles.13'10 wide is gonna require one escort for most of the states so i hire one for the whole trip and since this trip is gonna take three days thats two overnights for the escort so at $1.5 a miles and $140 for the overnights escort will cost $2250.i will be traveling 8 states so i estimate the permits to cost around $600.a load that high is gonna require a pole car thats another $2250.$5 a mile for my truck. thats $7000. i will move this load for no less than $12000.MartinFromBC, 281ric and TripleSix Thank this.

i dont deal with overheight or overweight just overwidth under 12 feet so dont be too harsh on me
SHC Thanks this. -
The problem with Pa. is their numerical system of road numbers is so stupid that sometimes ever their own permit people cant figure it out and they expect drivers from across the country to figure them out. Why list every fricking ramp? I think I try prepare as well as anybody as far as knowing my routes, if I need escorts, possible curfews and where I am going to park but you give me a Pa. permit I will pull my hair out with routes such as Sr003089 which is basically a right hand turn lane at a four way stop sign.

At the load at 50,000 pounds you are probably going to need overweight permits, not just oversize because at 13' tall it wont go on a spread axle step or flat. Well, it will, if you want to be 17' tall going to Ma.
281ric Thanks this.
