I go into bad spots all the time last run to ND I did for $6,400 out of Houston that's over $3.75/mi only thing coming out was drill mud paying $1.25/mi most guys say that's $2.50/all miles I'll do that....not me. It takes two days to get there so that gives me time to watch the market and call on a few loads even if it's picking up before I drop, last load I found out had 350/mi of deadhead but was $1.85/loaded mile or $1.45/all miles the thing is I didn't have to drive 1,700 loaded miles for $1.25/ mi I did 1,550/mi at $1.45/mi and put me in a better spot for freight and I didn't give the broker the satisfaction of getting that cheap freight moved while lining there pockets with money.

It makes my day turning down cheap broker freight just last week had one call me about local moves I could do three loads a day at $250 a load....I told him I wouldn't move them loads if he was standing there with cash when I dropped! I stand my ground and don't back off if there calling me it's because there having trouble covering it, I say this all the time you can't miss something you never had.... I've got buddy's that call all worked up I had a load going to xxxxxx and paid good money I'm pissed, I give prices on loads all the time I never get..so with that said I'm not out anything because it was never giving to me in the first place.

how do you take care of inevitable breakdowns???

one poster is waiting to get his driveline fixed for the second time. this will be his 3rd down week. he's into the bill 6G for one shop and nowhere closer to be fixed. plus loss of revenue.

i spent 10G on a electrical issue. over 2 months. 4 weeks in the shop at home. 4 weeks on the road with service calls. before the problem finally got fixed. for free.

sure, you need a HUGE piggy bank. but one unsolved breakdown can wipe things out real fast.

first off, I wouldn't have been at the first shop that long to begin with, I would have made arrangements in a major deal like that to have the truck taken to a shop I knew. and since the drive shaft went out and tore wires loose in the back of the rig , what the hecks is back there besides the taillights, pigtail and stuff?

and one breakdown can wipe things out, but if ya have saved up toilet paper, wiping isn't as big of a problem.

This mentality will make it so that brokers will take advantage of you and you being in a bad spot all the time. You will be their prey . Try telling the broker , no thanks I need X amount . You will be surprised , you will get it sometimes. Not always as the broker is used to selling drivers that " this is a good rate for this lane crap ".
If ur company's idea of a good run is sending u to a bad area w a subpar rate and bringing u back w a cheap rate , I would be looking for another company to lease on to.

There's a driver on here claiming that you burned fuel for free passing up on the $1.25 just to deadhead a little farther for the $1.85 load. Makes you want to bang your head into the wall how some drivers just can't grasp it. Also makes me wonder if part of the reason they can't grasp it or have such angst deadheading is because their "good rate" to a deadzone really wasn't good after all.

most don't want to live out on the road months at a time. so they're offered loads that keep em close to home. some just live in a bad area. which is half this country.

you also got to provide customer service. cuz in this business. you want all the friends (brokers/agents) you can get.

sure, there's some wheeling and dealing involved. SOME times. but cheap rates such as on the load boards. never surfaced. there was cheap, but not THAT cheap.

Is this one of those guys that says, Hmmmm I have a driveline vibration which is most likely a U-joint but I am going to wait till I go home to fix it in a week or 2??? Instead of spending the 50 -75 bucks on a new U-joint and fixing it yourself in what, an hour tops??? Seems like I hear about this way to often. Its not hard to see a U-joint going out before the vibrations even start....
