I guess I am wondering if the National OTR loads were running good right now and whether my availability (not requiring much home time) would help me get better runs. Hoping OTR National Dry is okay for miles.
I will be driving up to Marshfield for training, and then I believe I have to test in Gary, according to my recruiter. I will need to find a place to store my car before hitting the road with a trainer. Will I be able to make arragements for my car after schooling? Can I dive it to, and leave it at, the Gary terminal? That is where I would take most of my home time, and I figure I'll rent an indoor storage unit for my car before the winter or as soon as I get time there to do it.
To summarize my situation:
- Pretty much homeless - Legal residence with friend in IL, not really able to stay there comfortably or regularly.
- Plan to keep my car and some personal belongings at indoor storage near Gary terminal - storage unit will be a home base for me
- Plan on spending home time in my truck at Gary, taking a cab to get my car and things out of storage when needed. Will also take home time elsewhere on road in truck.
-Sometimes will take home time in hotel, or if in Gary, get my car and visit friends
Can anyone tell me if this sounds doable and what I might expect in this situation? Do I need a different plan?
Anyone have any questions for a ROEHL trainer?

I had lunch with a Roehl driver in Appleton that ran for about three weeks then took his 4-5 days off in Gary as he left his car there in the lot. He didn't have a house to deal with either so he had a good discount with a Chicago hotel for when he was back. He had relatives in the area. Sometimes he took his home time in other locations and Roehl was fine as long as truck was parked safely. He had gotten divorced and gave her the house...didn't feel he needed one. Had a storage unit in Gary with stuff he couldn't get in truck. Seemed to work well for him for over three years so it has been done.

One parked his car in Gary as you plan to do and slept in a bunk room or his truck during off time.
Another did not have a car, and was a big baseball fan and was gonna take off time in every city with a Major League Baseball team.
Drive a couple weeks take a 3 day break in St Louis, rent a car or call a cab and go see the Cardinals plays. Then drive 2 weeks take a few days off in Atlanta to see the Braves, then to Houston to see the Astros etc...
Another driver who's kids had all left home and moved to far corners of the country rented out her house and was gonna live in her truck and see the Nation.
She would take her off time at either her kids homes, or just take a few days off near Yellowstone National Park, Grand Canyon, New York City etc... and use ROEHL as a way to travel to places she wanted to see.
You will not be alone as a "homeless driver"harlycharly55 and Trish in SC Thank this. -
Been offline for a bit and just wanted to post a quick thanks for those replies. Sounds like this is not too uncommon and I appreciate hearing that others have made this work. As a newbie, I'll have to see how long I can deal with the "homeless" aspect mentally, but it sounds like a situation I'd be comfortable with for awhile. Viking84 - your examples were on the money, just what I was thinking. Wherever it becomes opportune to take a break or extend a reset, that will be my home time, and maybe 2-3 times a year I can swing that in a cool location to take in some sights, see a game, visit relatives in other states, etc. Since I'll be a slave to my schedule most of the time, having that small freedom will be a huge plus. Being a loner sucks sometimes, so having some freedom helps.

Is it common for a female student to request a female trainer? I would think it would be just like the nonsmoking thing. Or is it more common for gender mixes, which seems weird to me (not professional).

Although, since there are not many Female trainers, you may have to wait as much as a week before one is available.
I have trained around 20 Female drivers, and in reality, after all is said and done, there is very little difference, but you can most definitely wait for a Female trainer.
PS= I lived in Columbia (Northeast section Summit subdivision) and retired from the Army at Ft Jackson there.
My Daughter graduated from Ridgeview High School and is married to a guy that lived there as well.Trish in SC Thanks this. -
I may very well decide gender doesn't matter at Roehl with a trainer, it's just that I've read so many horror stories of things which happened with other companies. I'm sure sometimes the female was the one taking advantage but mostly it was the other way around. I witnessed too much nonsense like that when I was in the army to put myself in such a position. -
I feel confident that ,regardless of gender, the trainer will be competant. I haven't seen any complaints about Roehl trainers in any of the threads.(Granted I haven't seen all the threads , but from what I've seen there aren't many complaints about training) Once you get over the idea that you are female in a mostly male trade I think most people won't care anyways.
