Automatic transmissions are a costly repair in cars. Imagine what they are in trucks. Way too much than can go wrong and expensive to fix just to make it easier to drive. I don't understand the fascination to throw money away.

I think CR England has them beat on ethical bankruptcy as far as leasing.

Yeah but I can remember the good old days of when the gear shift was on the steering column. Shifters on the floor were a luxury.
That's how I first learned. Driving my Dads old Bedford van with a 3 speed. Nothing fancy. And if you've ever driven a French car like Citroen or Renault, the gear shift came out if the dashboard !!! It was like playing a trombone.,
But the funny thing is, you got used to it. There were some pretty exotic and crazy stuff going on back home in the 60s and 70s. All sorts of weird transmissions but funnily enough, no automatics anywhere.
I know it's a temptation to go the easy route but really. I note that Volvo claims driving an auto makes you concentrate more. I don't buy that, and that it's safer. Boy, they really are stretching the propaganda aren't they.
I guess they have to lay it on thick to sell the concept.
I prefer the skill of changing gears myself. Not gonna change anytime soon. Whatever are they going to dream up next? In the name of safety and concentration.

I drove a '79 Dodge Ram that had 3 on the tree. The Renault I drove was Americanized... had the stick in the usual spot. So did the Yugo, for that matter.

As far as Volvo's claims about concentrating more, I dunno anything about that, but there are things that have to be done in order to maximize fuel efficiency. Any monkey can climb in the driver's seat and go A to B, but they'll burn a crapload of fuel if they don't know how to properly drive that truck... just like a manual.

I think all this manual love comes from drivers with ##### insecurities who want "a big stick" to compensate.

Check my posting history, I've provided more legitimate benefits to using an automatic than you've provided excuses for not driving one (and that's saying something.)

lol... belittling and exaggerated claims. Did I hit a nerve? :yes2557:
