Right now I have a New Mexico regular license, non-CDL. I am moving back to GA after 3 years, and I need to get a CDL-AP (learners permit) so I can attend CDL school in Georgia. Can I go straight from a New Mexico regular license to a Georgia CDL permit, or do I have to transfer my New Mexico regular license to a Georgia regular license, and THEN apply and test for the CDL permit? If possible I would like to eliminate the hassle of getting a regular license when I really only need the permit... Thanks in advance, hoping there is someone who has gone through a similar experience.

I haven't had to do that, but am a little familiar with how DDS does things. Since you'll at least need a GA DL, just go in to the nearest DDS office and tell them at the counter what you want to do (transfer to GA + CDL learner's). I can't remember if they make you take the written exam for an out of state transfer. You will, of course, take the written CDL tests to get that permit, regardless how they handle the transfer.

The official website may have more details, but I doubt it. At least go to the site and make sure you have all the required ID documents. They have a good checklist. You can't just walk in there and hand in your out of state license any more. Gotta keep illegals and/or Al Qaeda off the road dontcha know.

Before you go to DDS, make sure you have a medical card. Search the FMCSA medical examiner registry for a doctor and get your physical if you haven't already done that.

So you'll either spend a while there and leave with the CDL permit, or worst case leave with a class C and have to return for the CDL permit. I can't imagine why they'd make you do two trips, but then we're talking about government intelligence here so I wouldn't put it past them.

FYI once you have the permit, you have to schedule the range/road test by phone, usually a few weeks in advance. Your CDL school will likely coordinate that so that you and a few others will schedule back-to-back the same day and test out on the same truck.

You will need your nm license, ss card, birth certificate, and 2 pieces of recent mail one being a bill or bank statement. You will basically apply for both at the same time. It will take 10 to 15 min to complete forms. When you pass your tests they will issue you two licenses one for class c and the ap.If you fail your test you will walk out with just your temp ga c license. It is really not that hard especially if you can understand the requirements or have all the documents already. Also there are ways and loopholes to get your license If for Instance you lack proof of residence. It will not be the process that you are inquiring about. You can get your license changed and the ap simultaneously and you should have nothing to worry about.

Sounds great. I will have all the documents required by then, just wasn't sure about the process. Thank you!

Just an update for anyone that may be looking for any further info in the future...
I went to the GA DDS, and they made me get a regular class C drivers license, transferred from the out of state one I already had, which cost me another $20 on top of the CDL-AP testing/license fees. Fortunately, we did that all in one sitting, so I didn't have to come back to take care of the CDL business. Just cost more than I was hoping...

I ended up going on Wednesday, because they were also closed Tuesday for Memorial Day. Pulled up at 0830 and the parking lot was already packed! I was surprised by the efficiency of the staff though. EVERY counter had a person behind it, and they called the next number before the current customer even walked away. That being said, I was still in there about two hours....

If there's anything I know, it's that the Georgia DDS is tons more efficient now than when I got my original driver's license way back in the day, back when they were still the DMV. Back then, they had two people behind the counter, lines backed up to the street, and a couple of little computer terminals for the knowledge tests. I just got my CDL permit last week and they have sufficient seating, 15 or so staffed counters, and an entire room of computers for the tests. I wouldn't call it "pleasant" necessarily, but it is not the comedy routine fodder that it used to be.
