day 1 70 hrs available 12 hrs used 58 hrs left
day 2 58 hrs available 10 hrs used 48 hrs left
day 3 48 hrs available 6 hrs used 42 hrs left
day 4 42 hrs available 12 hrs used 30 hrs left
day 5 30 hrs available 9 hrs used 21 hrs left
day 6 21 hrs available 10 hrs used 11 hrs left
day 7 11 hrs available 11.5 used -0.5 available (did my post trip on duty after parking just before my 70 hrs was up.
    day 8 -0.5 available 0 used -0.5 available
day 9 12 hrs roll over from day 1, so 11.5 available for the day... used 10 hours 1.5 left
day 10 10 hrs roll over from day 2, so 11.5 available for the day... used 11 hours 0.5 left
day 11 6 hrs roll over from day 3, so 6.5 available for the day... and this can continue on forever.

Now depending on when you park for the day on day 7 in this example, you may be able to get a 34 hour reset in before the hours from day 1 roll over... it will depend on the pick up and delivery schedule of the loads, and can you wait for the 34 hours to complete, and include the required two 1 to 5 am periods. the hours roll over at midnight time of your home terminal.

That's a pretty good synopsis of how the roll over hours function and the option for the 34, TLeaHeart.

Last year I was in Laredo and offered a load to Las Vegas, but turned it down because I thought I didn't have enough hours. Then it got to working on me, so I built a spreadsheet to analyze it more closely, and sure enough, I'd have been about two hours short of making a JIT delivery. I then got that run from Laredo to San Diego, a longer run, but delivering a day later. That made all the difference when I ran into that day where I only had 2 hours available to run, which would have been the day I needed to run to Las Vegas and do a live unload. Instead that day turned into the short run to the top of the mountains and cooler air by San Diego.

I continued to use that spreadsheet for a month or so until I got the hang of looking at multi-day runs, available hours, hours coming back, and time zones. The fact that hours don't come back until midnight HOME TIME got a little dicey a couple of times when I was on the East Coast with an early a.m. delivery, but I had to wait until Pacific time for my hours to roll back in.

One thing to remember is that if you have 2 hours left on your 70, for example, and have 7 hours coming back at midnight, you can start rolling as early as 10:00 pm and the 7 hours will come back automatically at midnight. Roll right on through the night and finish by 7:00 am.

Its not a choice if youre out of hours, but Im afraid some of you will have to find it out the hard way from D.O.T. before you believe it but that's fine too because its not going to cost me a dime.

Actually, it is a choice. Frequently I'll decide whether to forego running and take a 34 or whether to continue running on recap hours coming back. Sometimes the correct choice is taking less than a 34 in order to build up hours and then go, if I have a lot of recap hours coming back. If I'm out on the road I dislike taking a 34 unless I really have to if I'm running solo, since most dispatches for a solo driver (in my company) are one or two day runs and rarely chew up time like multi-day runs will. Right now I'm running coast to coast dedicated on a team and we always make the round trip and take a 34 every week at home.

It is ALWAYS A CHOICE. A 34 hour reset is optional ALWAYS. can ALWAYS run your recap hours. No recap hours for the day, don't drive... very simple.

Pick up a log book at the truck stop and start filling it out and working the recap. The book walks you through it.
