I've just been diagnosed with a slow heart rate and may need a pacemaker, I'm trying to get back into driving. Will my having a pacemaker be a problem getting hired?

I think the best place to start investigating would be with your personal Doctor.

She said it shouldn't cause any problems with any type of job I do.

I worked with a driver that had a pacemaker. He finally failed the physical because eventually the pacemaker couldn't keep a steady heart rhythm.

Like your doctor said this won't be a problem at all. Please see the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration rules and regulation at the link below for details.

    Sounds like a defective pacemaker.

Don't want to overspeak here but I believe the DOT has changed the policy and will disqualify you if you have a pace maker. Check with the safety dept of any trucking company.

I would print out that reg indicated in post # 5 and carry it to your DOT physical.

Actually, the "policy" to date is as posted on the FMCSA website; additionally trucking companies are subject to the FMCSA's rules and regulations which is where the afore mentioned information was posted from.

What have you been diagnosed with in relation to the slow heart rate?

It also depends on if you have nuerocardiogenic syncope because that has been recently changed from a 3 month certificate to a pacemaker not being recognized as a treatment for nuerocardiogenic syncope.

I forget the guys name that received the first implant pacemaker but he received several of them and lived to 82 years old and outlived the inventor and the surgeon involved with it.
