What these guys are saying about rush job tire mounts is true. Really it doesn't take any extra time to mount them right using plenty of tire lube and visually checking to make sure everything looks seated right. It's a pain and I hate mounting tires but I started doing my own several months ago and might be coincidence but my steers this last time didn't need any weights for the first time in I can't remember how long. Most tires have a line that runs around the sidewall it's about a 1/4" away from the rim. Visually look at that all the way around and it should be evenly spaced from the rim.

I took the weights off of the passenger wheel, and it helped a little bit. The shaking is not quite so intense, and it comes and goes now. I actually get some smooth driving at some points :). I talked to the manager of a shop I was referred to for tire work and he suggested trying new brake drums. He said if that doesn't fix the problem they will true the tires and spin balance them. What do you guys think of replacing the brake drums as a next step? I figure it won't be as expensive as tires and it won't hurt to replace them anyway. He said it is important that I get Gunite Machine balanced drums. Part no. 3721 AX. What do you guys think?

I forgot to mention that I can feel some slight pulsing when light braking at slow speeds. Is this indicative of a warped drum?

Yes, that sounds like a warped drum. If you replace the drums make sure to put new shoes on as well.

    cliffster21 Thanks this.

Do you think that the warped drum could cause the rest of the shaking?

Are your wheels within spec? Aluminum rims wear out especially if cheap tires are used. Alcoa makes a gauge to check this, but if the outside bead edge is getting thin you can pretty much tell without taking the tire off

You can't mount a tire properly on a worn out rim.

I have steel wheels, they don't look especially worn.

Check the shock absorbers. Take one end loose and see if it pops up any or drive it and.after a couple of hours check to see if the bottom tube is hotter than the top one. If the bottom one is the same temp as the top the shock is bad. My tire expert advice is to buy premium steer tires and use counteract balance beads. I have an '06 9900ix and have changed both steer and drive wheels and I have a vibration yet, next is new drums at next brake job. Good luck.
