Hey guys, I am wondering if anyone has experience in the CDL-B industry? What attracts me most to this opportunity is the hometime - admittedly, I do not know anyone in the industry. When I think about these jobs, the following comes to mind; bus driver, delivery driver (Pepsi and the like), sales etc. Regarding pay, it seems like one can expect to earn around $15 per hour. I am currently considering a career in this field and would love to hear your thoughts and guidance. Thank you so much for your time.

I've been seeing over the road class B drivers for FedEx. Recently talked to a guy said he was making a decent wage running a team. Other then that can't really help you.

You can get up to around 19 an hour depending on city, a little more for specialized work, hazmat, certien union trash jobs and the like. Not bad work but you top out pretty quick, if you find something you like and it fits your cost of living needs then it can work out. And sometimes it can lead to a class A gig

The Class B guys do a lot of hands on freight. That can be a lot of work. The pay is also less. If you are wanting something that the Class B jobs offer that a Class A job doesn't and are willing to work harder for less money then go for the Class B job.

However, if you are not driving a truck that bends, we will not show you the secret handshake.

Wooly Rhino, thanks so much for reminding me of the secret handshake - really shaking things up in my mind! On a more serious note, do you think that Class B jobs are for younger folks...under 40?

I know a lot of Class B guys that died young. That loading and unloading cases of beer got to them. Usually, any thing that requires lifting is for someone younger then myself. And I have had that view since I was 30.

I drove beer delivery back in the 1980's. That's some HARD work. I'm 52 and wouldn't do it now. I love being OTR, but....I have often thought about drivers with a B license. I live part-time in Colorado (Denver) and have considered moving here full-time and driving a city bus. Good hourly pay and great benefits. Several years ago I worked for a passenger van service (16 ppl) that ran people (mostly) from DIA (Denver Int. Airport) to the ski resorts up in Summit County and the Vail area. They paid me $15 an hour (2005) and most people tipped. It wasn't unusual for me to make 80-100 dollars in cash daily plus my hourly. No bennys though.

I also used to drive a motor coach from Kalamazoo or Grand Rapids, MI to Chicago and Detroit on weekends back in the early 1990's. Mostly for football games and shopping trips around Christmas. They used to pay me a flat rate of $100 (it was 10 hrs. minimum), but I always got tips and that was another 80-100 bucks. I also got to eat for free and if we went to a game I got to go in for free. If it was overnight, I got a per diem and hotel room. The company didn't hire full-time drivers because they didn't want to pay insurance and such. At that time I had a full-time LTL local job so I loved working for them on the weekends.
