Also, do they do the background checks?
I have nothing on my background, and my employment for the last 3 years is relatively good (minus an 8 month gap, but most employers and companies I spoke with said 8 months isn't a terrible problem)
do companies verify your employment history before sending you to school?

Yes they will. Normally takes about a week or two for the B/G and employment history to be completed. They will also send you for a DOT physical and drug test. Some will have the physical/drug test done prior to arrival at school.
cabwrecker Thanks this. -
Ok, to clarify, are you talking about a trucking co. that has their own school, or, are you talking about a third party truck school ? Some do any verifications prior to you arriving, some will do them as you are attending class. The reason being a lot of new hires are "no-shows".

I know Prime, Maverick, TMC, JB Hunt, Schinder, WTI, PGT and several other companies (Basically, all of the ones I en-masse applied to) checked my references with my current employer, and a job I had about two years ago. I know this because my current boss found out I was quitting, thanks to Maverick calling my current company, when I specifically asked them not to for another few weeks. After he found out; I let them all loose on him.
In short- yes, they will check. But only the jobs you've listed. Past three companies I've worked for, I didn't list old jobs because they were either seasonal part time work I added onto my full time work, or jobs I wasn't at long enough to report that just hurt my work experience. Even if your "employment history" from a reporting source like Hirerite shows you had background report requests from companies you worked for, it doesn't necessarily mean you worked for them in your perspective employers eyes. It only means a company asked for your background report.
But you'll need to show something, atleast. Tread carefully, and don't give out anymore information than is required. -

I'm pretty sure I make too much for the WIA
I'm like right in between, I make too much for financial aid, don't make enough to pay for it myself
Me, my fiance, and our son all depend on me trucking -

Your in Midland? I'm guessing you don't have a CDL ? Just saying ....should be a few out there that will teach you what you need without school.
Fuel haulers are so hungry for drivers their paying $25 / hr. Plenty of oilfield guys too......I'd work those angles AND send the fiancée down to the assistance office.....as long as your not married then you don't count.
Good luck hand -
Don't count on ever getting a job with a major carrier without the school... their insurance won't allow it. It limits your options, just like folks who have only run automatics. Also... an outfit running fuel tankers employing someone with zero experience? I'd kinda doubt that, but stranger things have happened I'm sure.

In rare examples like labor shortages in Midland..... a young wannabe applies for a drivers job....has no experience but lots of desire..... I've seen smaller outfits "invest" in the candidate by bringing them up thru the bobtail stuff and finally the big stuff. Concrete companies do it all the time...train for mixer then bid haul truck.....
It's possible.
