I've got '06 Volvo 630 D12 with 640K, and my Pyrometer started showing at 1200-1500. Is this a sign of bad EGR valve/cooler? Maybe a turbo? Truck still drives. I stopped in Lexington, KY to wait until Monday to take it to a Volvo dealer..

It doesn't seem to burn oil. Oil level is good and no black smoke coming from exhaust... mpg and power still good.

Whens the last time you change your air filters. Air restriction will cause your pyrometer to run hot. there my be a egr problem. but you would usualy feel the loss of power. dont keep running it like that because you will burn up the turbo.

All the filters (including air) were changed 3 weeks ago (that's when I purchased this truck). When stopped I can hear turbo "popping" due to heat, and turbo seems old, very rusty ... but again, no power loss whatsoever..

Pre-emissions on the DPF
Lady K Thanks this. -
Is it only doing it on a pull? Can you drop a gear and bring pyro down? Pull intake side of turbo along with exhaust side and look for damage and back and forth play with wheel. Should have side to side play but no rubbing and no back and forth play. The popping noise probably verifies the gauge is accurate. I have never ran a truck over 1200 I can't imagine the damage that your motor is having at 1500 degrees.

Actually when pulling, the temp goes down a bit sometimes... And noticed a drop when driving in low gear going to a motel... but didn't try putting in lower gear on the highway. I'll sure try that tomorrow, cuze i've got 30miles to go to the shop. Thanks for your advices guys!

GOSH! We used to run the EGT to 1250 then put a baseball cap over it. 200 degrees wont melt one. I was actually taught, not over 1450 for over 5 minutes. However, did you ever dream of getting your foot out of it. I've run bullwagons that had a 400 Cummins and turned up to 500. Running from OKC to Denver on a 70 degree night wth a 30 mph wind out of the SW you had to watch it every minute. We didn't have cruise control, just a brick.
