I have spent the last 6 months pulling a 28' trailer with a Cascadia 10 speed for a traveling dance compitition. I had about a month off, which I really enjoyed. Spent a week on the outer banks, spent some time with the.wife and put in some apps for when this tour is done.
There are 4 weeks of finals. The first 2 one of the other drivers handled. The second two are mine. I head out to Toledo,OH for a week then to Virginia Beach for a week. Then my time with this company is over, unless I come back in January when the tour stars again. The other driver got hit at a truck stop on the way home.

So the truck I drove for most of the tour is gone. The.replacement is a 2014 Volvo automatic. I have never drove an auto...So I'm a little nervous. Also will be pulling a 53' trailer the last 2 weeks. A little bit nervous about that too. Any advise?

Gotta drive up 74 to 77 in NC, VA and WV. Some mountains. What is the difference driving an automatic with mountains. The truck won't be too heavy though.... but twice as long! I know the first time I have to park at the truck stop is going to be butt pucker time...lol Any advice is appreciated.

I got pretty good maneuvering that pup around. Backing it got easier every week. But I always tried to take turns and think about how I would maneuver with a bigger trailer. I knew I wouldn't be with that pup forever...I drove a big trailer all through school and it didn't seem like a big deal, cause that's all I knew!

I got through 6 months with no trainer by always stopping to think.. being extra cautious, and asking questions. So here I am. Over thinking.... nervous but not scared....and asking questions!!! Lol

Pulling a 53' wagon isn't so hard- you just have to remember it's not going to turn as fast as a pup trailer when you're backing and you will also have to watch the swing of the back of the trailer when you turn if you have the tandems pulled up.
Just make your turns a little wider and watch where your trailer tandems are- you don't want to drop them into a ditch or take out any road signs or telephone poles going around turns.

Driving in mountains is just a matter of speed control and being in the right gear before you start down- that, I think, goes the same whether it's a manual or auto shift.
I've never driven an auto shift so I can't help you there- hopefully someone here will be able to tell you more.

Good luck and be safe :)

Just hammer on it. Should run high gear all the way. 53 ft is easy to back. Give yourself plenty of turning room.
    Keep er twixt the ditches!

No judgement of weight... I have a few extra pounds...ok, a couple dozen extra pounds myself...lol

But I always felt a little bit 'less than' with the short trailer....lol... like I wasn't a 'real' trucker yet...lol...kinda like taking the short bus to school...lol

That volvo will do everything but steer. Very nice ride, great handling, that auto trans in that particular truck is just brilliant.

    Truck stop advice---

Always go for pull thru's as your first choice and don't back anywhere you don't feel comfortable. The other drivers may kid you and flip you #### for taking too long but if you ask them for help they will cut the #### and get out and help you. We are all tired and in a hurry but none of us wants to see an accident or worse.

Drive your trailer and not the truck and remember, it takes 8-10 feet for the trailer to react after you've made a turn.

And finally G O A L get out and look.

You should be fine ,backing a pup is harder because they re act alot quicker , just dont forget about the longer wagon with your turns and lane changes ,that auto trans will adjust on upgrades
