I am currently considering a career change (for roughly the last 11 years, I have been in multifamily property management) and do not have a commercial license, so I am primarily interested in a paid and free driver training program in order to get my CDL. My 'regular' license has recently expired, but will be resolved as soon as I receive my 2013 tax refund. In anticipation of this, I looked to see if I had any surprise violations. I found the following:
1) 2012: I received a red light ticket that I never even saw until last month ( I moved several times since 2011 due to changes in employment status or location). Because I never saw it, it went to failure to appear or pay and resulted in the DMV attempting to suspend my license. As soon as I discovered this ticket, I went to court (resolving the failure to appear) and arranged to take traffic school by August. Since the reason for the invalid suspension is moot, I have been assured by DMV that it has been waived (this is confirmed by a letter I received last week stating that the suspension has been set aside, valid or not).
2) 2013: I received a hands free wireless ticket that, due to the fact that I lost my employment and connected housing not long after, I also had a string of family matters including 3 deaths and 2 hospitalizations, I lost the ticket and missed the opportunity to fight it. I can prove that my phone was not in use that entire day. This ticket was referred to county collections and the court has refused me the opportunity to fight the infraction at this point. I expect to file a motion with the court to reopen the case soon as this is adding to an ongoing hardship and I can provide documentation that my phone was not even in use that entire day.
3) 2014: I received a ticket for an unregistered vehicle. While not a surprise, it is something I found and I am working to resolve with the limited resources I have. As of this moment, DMV has not been able to satisfactorily document what I actually owe, and I refuse to proceed with this until they do so as I think I am being double charged.
I am a veteran (not recently separated) who is currently unemployed and homeless, and there may be tax credits available to any organization that brings me in under the Welfare to Work program (?)
While I am open to training elsewhere, I would prefer training and home base out of the Sacramento, California area.
I have spoken with an old Army friend of mine who did the same thing, and after a lot of thought and discussion, I think that IF I can find a company willing to bring me in and work with me on my needs, I would like to remain a company driver for 12-18 months and then make the move to owner operator for the company....???
Given what I have just stated, does anyone have any advice or leads to potential employers? I have spoken with several companies that will not proceed with me due to the hands free wireless violation (in California, it is considered an infraction, but under DOT rules, it is considered a moving violation and too recent), which I have discussed above.

The only responsible advice I can render is use the government assistance to learn a trade other than truck driver. No offense intended but your recent record of offenses make you a very poor candidate to become a truck driver at this time.

How are my offenses making me an irresponsible driver? I never saw the failure to stop ticket until TWO YEARS after the event, I appeared in court, never having seen the video and pled no contest, and arranged for traffic school. On the wireless ticket, I CAN PROVE MY PHONE WAS NOT IN USE THE ENTIRE DAY and had intended to fight the ticket, but I had other priorities to deal with before the ticket and my life got in the way. The unregistered vehicle came when there was a paperwork error and the DMV cannot explain to me satisfactorily how much I actually owe.
Prior to 2012, I have NO tickets and there are NO accidents on my record.
Between 2010 and 2014, I moved EIGHT times and a great deal of mail was lost in the process. -
Without a valid operators license and with the redlight ticket (a serious offense in trucking) and the others still unresolved, Im afraid you will have a hard time getting into it right now? ChinaTown might have some suggestions when he comes in but I dont think I could tell you anything that would help except maybe get everything resolved before you check with them. Sorry.

Of course, I wasn't suggesting proceeding without resolving my issues, but a prior responder called me irresponsible. As soon as I found these issues, I began the process to resolve them. I have an appointment next week with a local legal aid attorney to help me appeal the wireless ticket decision; after the appointment I scheduled to resolve my 'regular' license.
The redlight ticket has been resolved (I need to complete traffic school by next month, and I am getting assistance with the funds to do so). -
xlsdraw, Puppage and 70s_driver Thank this.

Please quote where I called you irresponsible.

On the last written test I took for my regular license (class C and M1) for CA, I missed 2 questions and they both had to do with Alcohol... I do not drink often, and most certainly not when I plan on driving the same day after drinking. -
Im sure Chinatown will have some insight for you. He'll probably be in later on. Theres a chance you might find something out that way but once you get everything worked out most of the companies I know about are on the east coast.

Have you researched CSA 2010? All companies and drivers are now subject to it. If you are unable to eliminate the 3 tickets you listed from your record you will be a very difficult hire. Points drivers acquire under CSA 2010 are also tallied against the employer. The phone ticket is automatic termination with most companies and very heavy fines levied against both driver and employer. The red light ticket is also automatic termination with many companies.
