Personally I would forget the 50/50 split of what ever % you decide.

Take the gross (the figure you get after the FSC and the cut from the company you are leased to) and then pay your driver what would amount to about .40 a mile. This would be the base pay. On a good load or week he would would do better, on a slower week not as good.
I've worked for 20% to 30% of what I just mentioned. It makes things much simpler this way, rather than its 50/50 after tolls, and scales etc.

I am responding as a DRIVER, not an owner. The FSC is part of the rate of freight. That's not untouchable. It's revenue the truck brings in. With the FSC is how you figure your rate per mile. If that was untouchable then a lot of people can say they run for $1.00 a mile. You and everyone else knows NOBODY can do that! I wouldn't work for 20% or even 50% AFTER tolls and scales etc. That's why you didn't like percentage.

What does it matter if the % is 10% of $4 a mile or 20% of $2????????????

Its still .40 a mile. If you tell a driver you are hiring them at 10% they will walk away before hearing the rest of the story.

That's right. If the driver has been doing it long enough, he would be smart to walk away from 10% of $4.00. Are you assuming he's going to hire someone straight out of school that doesn't understand that all of his empty miles are for free? If you can $4.00 a mile, than what's the problem. You can't get it and neither can I, especially for every load. I wouldn't work for 20% of the gross. That's all I was saying to you. You stated you worked for 20% to 30% after tolls and scales etc. I wouldn't work for that either. I'm sorry you did. The only way to work percentage is by going off of the gross. I knew a guy that worked for 30% of 75%. That's not making money.

    How much was the 75%?????

When I was working for 28% to 30% I was making about $40,000 a yr just like all the other average truck drivers. Granted I was working my butt off for my brother, but still it is possible to make a living on % pay.

I don't understand your question. lol OK...... $100.00 to the truck, 25% to the company where the truck was leased. That is $75.00 or 75% left over. He was getting 30% of the 75% which was $22.50. For every $100.00 the truck made, he was making $22.50 or 22.5% or 30% of 75%. Are you with me or did I explain that for nothing? If your asking 75% of what, when you use brokers it always varies in rate. It would be what ever he could get. The company he leased to didn't get him much freight so he could use their authority to book loads.

I understand what you are saying.

What I'm trying to say is that I do not care what the gross is, and I do not care what the % is.

All I care about is how much I make. As long as the % is adjusted to where the driver makes money thats all he should care about too.

OK, I guess it's all about what sounds the best to the driver. What I like is the splitting of the tolls and scales...as an owner. At the end of the day it's all pretty much the same.

I'm not splitting any of the cost with the guy I'm working for. Because what he wants you to do is help finance his trucking gig with your money. Front the toll money, front the fuel money, etc etc etc.

Either you work for some one, or you don't.
