45 degree backing

    I am with my trainer at us xpress an he's trying to teach me how to do a 45. I am struggling with it all cause of the set up. I understand follow your tandams an all but everything before I actually back is messing me up. All I want to know is how I should approach my spot I wanna back into and how to set it up. Step by step would be awesome or a video on how to set up will work to.

    EDIT:Nevermind just noticed you said 45 degree but I think this might still work.


    From the few videos I saw it depends(I'm not a driver...yet!),either trailer 1/2 trough the spot then turn Or past the spot till the front of the trailer is at the edge of where you want to go in ,STOP,fully turn wheel ,Then continue your backing maneuver

    This has been addressed many times on this forum. You are with your trainer now. Force him to explain things and coach you on why he's telling you to do certain things. I really think that's your best bet rather than trying to read everyone's answers here. It takes a lot of practice to get comfortable with everything. Your frustration at this point is normal. I don't recall their names, but there are only 2 posters on here that have been backing perfectly since day one.

    Start by hugging the spot you want to back into at a 90 degree angle, pass up the spot, when the front of the trailer is even with the end of the hole (you can also look for that spot in your convex mirror), cut the wheel all the way to the right, go a little bit past the 90 degree mark on your turn, then throw the wheel back all the way to the left and watch your d/s mirror until you can see the rear of your trailer pointing towards the hole. Then go into your back and try to hug the sight side, it's easier to make adjustments if you over cut it to the sight side.

    Best advice I can give you is do quarter turns of the steering wheel, have the trailer wheels draw a semi-circle when backing up, and when your trailer is parallel to the spot your parking or docking in whether it be cones or lines, straighten out your tractor(turn wheel hard one way to get your tractor in line with your trailer). Also go slow in the beginning and if your not sure pull up use all the space you have at your disposal, good luck.

    My trainer is trying to explain it to me it just not sticking as he says 80% of your backing is the set up. An stevep wouldn't that method use a lot of space? I mean the way you described it makes it sound super easy but right now me an him are in a tight spot where I can't use a lot of space.
