    Hi everybody,

So was presented an oppourtunity to drive a mixer for a local ready mix plant. The pay was something like $15.50/hour. I am a full time college student and the company said that they would be more than willing to work with my schedule and allow me to come work afternoons/evenings on the weekdays.

I enjoy new learning expierences which is also why I am considering this job. I have a Class A and under 100 hours of driving expierence (mainly grain hauling, and some flatbed work). Do any of you know anything about or have heard anything about driving/operating a ready mix truck? I am not afraid of hard work, but if it is an absolutely miserable job I think I would just prefer pass on the job offer.

    Looking for your input/suggestions/expierences.

    Thanks guys!

I have spoke to drivers here that drove for ready mix and absolutely hated it.One went back to driving a semi and the other a security guard for Tyson.Very uncomfortable trks and not by any means clean work.Get your durable work boots out you'll need them. Its hot and hard work I guess.

well i missed the insult, aside from that, hard work and you are being way under paid at 15 hr. that aside it beats a fast food joint while your in school. you will also learn some side skills like how to lay concrete should you need it later.

Most guys who work fulltime at college need to do it and have no money. He accumulated lots of money by doing it was which means a silver spoon is present. Now I have nothing against this as i had something of a silver spoon in mydoay as well. Here is he is bored and on his downtime and wanting to do something to kill time if its a halfway decent job. That same job most of us do with our blood and our tears (admittedly not a whole lot of sweat lol) to survive -feed and house ourselves and our families.

Just a priveleged college boy divorced from the realities of the world and wanting to be a trucking man, but only part time, and only if it isnt a completely crappy job.

First of all GenericUserName, I have no plans to be a "trucking man"...I truck from time to time but it isn't/will not be my main profession. With that being said I have the utmost respect for truckers whether they be OTR or day haulers, I believe it to be a thankless job so for all of you truckers reading this, on behalf of myself, thank you.

Second of all you don't know me so how can you say "silver spoon". From a young age I saw kids in school and the community handed everything on a silver platter from their parents. Albeit strange, but I decided at the age of 14 that I was going to break the mold of the typical student and actually attempt to provide for myself and pay off my college with money that I earned myself. 7 years later after a variety of jobs (started off doing HVAC at the age of 14, then agriculture, biochemistry, and industrial equipment operation) I have been lucky enough to have paid for my entire college education by myself (And that is something that not many students can say). So your silver spoon theory just flew out the window.

Lastly, the point of me posting this thread was to hear expierences and get opinions on ready mix driving. Simply put, if it was a rather lackluster job (for $15/hour) I wanted to know, that way I could go back to driving for my old employer or look elseware for employment.

Thank you to all of you who actually are contributing to this thread in a productive manner and giving your insight, I really appreciate it.

Respectfully saying you're reading way too much into his post.He may have money but unlike many college folks,he's not afraid to get out there and work hard like the trucking community does.He could be finding another line of work to kill the boredom but he chose trucking. He did grain hauling and flatbed work.Anybody else with a silver spoon as you put it would be too good to even come to a trucking forum.

Hi lokel, listen to patty, she's got her head in the right place. Good for you. Mixer driver is a tough job, and if you are schedule sensitive, meaning, you HAVE to be somewhere at a certain time, this may not be for you. Problems at the plant, or at the delivery site( something not ready for pouring) or simply, "can you just haul 1 more load"?, may make you miss a class or something. Mixer driving is a good job, thought of it myself, but I'd be cautious on the " part-time" thing. Maybe running stock pile in a dump truck for them would be more predictable.
