I was heading south on I5 got stuck in heavy traffic for about 4 1/2 hours. turns out there were two different accidents. Soooo
when I realized I would not get to where I needed to, I tried to figure out where I could stop. I had 70 foot poles on. I pulled in a closed scale prior to running out of time. NO ROOM. After traffic opened up and I was over about an hour I finally got to a rest stop. NO ROOM. So I hauled to the truck stop that I knew I could fit in. I dont think it would be safe to park on the side of the road or on/off ramps with dark colored poles at night. I did what I thought was the safest option. BUT.. What should I have done? and Can I get in trouble for that?

Log it as you actually did it and notate something to the effect of "Traffic delay, advanced to safe legal parking" then take a full 10 hour break (No split sleeper) and you should be fine as long as you don't make a habit of it.

Now, depending on where you were on I-5 there may have been other options for a safe place to park, but time will give you the experience to do this.

I Noted it all on my post trip. where I tried to stop and at what mile post each accident was. I plan on making a list of places I can stop with long loads for the future. First time in that situation. Kinda stressed me out.

Reminds me of a day that I had 4 deliveries with the final in Anaheim and got unloaded at 515pm and couldn't stay there, I figured I would use personal conveyance to Vernon to hide and sleep only for traffic to be at a standstill. My dispatcher called to see what I was up to and I told him and he said not to worry about my logs I could go to Ontario if needed to park...I'm like no... I need to sleep...not fight traffic for another 2 hours.

You used safe haven rule. Were there any rest areas??? I think you will be fine. As said above worst is call from safety. Had to use safe haven rule twice in a week to leave customers property nothing ever said, but let dispatch know what I did too.
