    Hi Friends,

I did a google search and came up with little to no information on this question. (mostly schools that promote their programs).

    • Is a CDL a national license?
    • If i get my CDL in Florida, is that good in other states?
    • Looking to work or change places of residence in the near future...will i be required to get a NEW CDL?

Thanks very much for your input.

A CDL is like any drivers licence. You get the licence from your home state and it is good to drive in all 50 states. If you change your permanent address to another state, you will have to get a new licence from the new state of residence. Some states let you just transfer your licence, other states make you retest to get the licence.

They all have the ability to transfer, providing you meet their criteria for residency for that particular state. Some may add things (Another vision test etc) for you to update and some things may get dropped. It all depends.

A CDL is nothing but your state license upgraded from a class D to a class A. The only thing federal about it is you have to follow the regulations set forth by the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration). States also have to abide by the rules. They can add to them and make them stricter, but they can't take away from the them.

Everything chris and jbee says is true. When you move you have 30 days to transfer your license. Many new drivers will go to a school out of state and be issued a CDL in that state. Then when they go home they have to transfer back.

When you get your CDL you have to certify with your state how you plan to run so they know whether you need a medical card or not. You can claim Interstate/ Intrastate, Exempted/Non-exempted. You'll learn all that stuff in school.

What I would do if I was you is check the company's hiring area on their website. Find one that hire in FL and the state you plan on moving to. Then moving will be a breeze and you can keep the same job.

    Thanks guys...
I hear stories about guys working in ND, keeping their license activate in another state.

Apparently they can get away with this in ND?

If their home of domicile is not ND and they work in ND for a company then yes they keep their license. IT is nothing more than a driver license with a higher class rating. If you move your home of domicile then you have to move your license to that state, usually within 30 days. As for what states do not require a retest, you can find those DMV's on the web and look under "contact us" and send them a E-Mail in regards to your questions.

One thing I've found, at least in the states I've dealt with, is that your HazMat endorsement won't transfer.

When I moved to Maryland I had to retake the written. I had one from before they did the background checks and they weren't going to make me do that portion of it. This was in 2002, so it may be different now.

Moved back to Florida and they wouldn't transfer it to here. I have to go through all that stuff again to get my endorsement back.

I changed states several times, now I'm back in texas and never changed my TX CDL.
It (until now) is better than other CDLs from other states in things such as lenght of time issued, restrictions, and such

I moved to Colorado from North Carolina in November of 2010... didn't actually get around to transferring my license until June of 2011. I was working for a small fleet owner leased to an interstate carrier (CRST Malone), and they didn't particularly seem to care about that. Colorado Department of Revenue never questioned me about it, either. Not saying I wasn't in the wrong - I was - I just never got my feet held to the fire over it.
As for hazmat, not sure... I had just dropped it in October 2010 (when my CDL was due for renewal, and hazmat would've been another $94 + I believe $128 for the endorsement.. IIRC, it's $16/yr for each CDL endorsement in North Carolina, and it's an eight year license)... transferred my CDL right over to Colorado without any problem... cost me $35 here for a five year license.
