Ok so I was sure I was ready for the transition change and want to get into trucking. I had been reading everything possible about what to expect, what not to, etc.etc., was prepared to leave my family for a year to drive otr (just to get the experience) and then come back to Atlanta and drive local.
Just when I'm ready to call and talk to a recruiter...it dawns on me that I have a fear of heights! So do I need to run from this industry as fast as possible, or am I making it out to be more than it is?

    Thanks for your input!

The ground is not any farther down from the cab of a truck driving through Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel than it is driving around Atlanta on I-285. Driving in the mountains was the best time I ever had driving. The scenery is great. The traffic is often sparse. The best rest area I ever stayed at overnight was on I-70 in side Utah about 70 miles east of I-15 intersection. What a beautiful place to wake up in the morning. There are like 15 spaces and I bet 99% of truckers don't know that place exists.

There are lots of good reasons not to be a trucker right now but fear of heights is not one of them.

This is my silver Volvo at my favorite rest area. I liked my Volvo but I liked my International better. I'd like to try a new ProStar.

Welcome to the club, I also have a fear of heights. However, mountains don't bother me—it's the rickety old bridges like the one on I-10 in Lake Charles, LA that scare me. I manage to get over it though without putting too many dents in the steering wheel.:biggrin_25523:

The causeway over Lake Ponchartrain is not one of my favorites either, even though I was able to let go of my death grip on the wheel long enough to shoot a few minutes of video coming into New Orleans.

I was just contemplating this thought the other day as I was driving along in a construction area on US-84 in LA... The pavement dropped off on the shoulder at least a foot. It always freaks me out a bit if there is a drop-off on one side or the other, and very little guardrail or Jersey barrier.

I mean really... what difference does it make? I could hold the truck in a nine foot lane, with Jersey barriers on both side, at 80 mph... and never scuff a tire. So why does the psychological effect of no barrier give me the chills?

Probably because I see a lot of odd things while I'm out on the road. Like an isolated big old oak tree... the only thing for miles around that someone could run off the road and hit... and they did. Skid marks leading off the road, through the grass, and right into the tree. What are the odds?:biggrin_25512:

From one transplanted Newnanite to a current Newnanite...

No need to run from the industry. If the scenery is too much for your phobia to handle just keep looking at the road in front of ya. Just stay away from skateboards and stick to vans, you actually gotta climb the loads of lumber to tarp them.

The 3rd week I was out by myself I had to cross the bridge coming out of Houston to me it is higher than the ones in Jax, any way, I was hauling liquid. Once I made it down the bridge safely, I gently released my two handed death grip on the wheel.:biggrin_25524:

it isn't the mountains that will bother you it will be them dam skinny bridges where the bottom if you can see it at all will look like a hundred miles away, and what will really get your blood pressur up is if you have to stop for some reason and you start feeling the thing move every time someone in a truck moves a bit

    NICE 1!!! I'm not that scared! :biggrin_2559:
Bridges don't really bother me to much, except for the sorry #$$ bridge going across the bay from Oakland to San Francisco. I hate that one. Sunshine Skyway never bothered me. No problems with the 1 that crosses the Maumee river in Ohio. Mountains scare me (I Think) because of the whole cliff factor without a guard rail.

I'm going to pursue it anyways because I can't stand the thought of not doing it just because I'm scared...I don't work like that. Besides the upside is that I will be making a whole lot more than I am currently.

Thanks all for the advice...anyone else I would love to hear it!
