Around 1:23 a.m. on Route 17 South and Bergen Avenue, a southbound J.B. Hunt tractor trailer rear-ended an unmarked police unit. Waldwick, N.J., officer Christopher Goodell, 32, who was operating a radar in the vehicle was killed.

The 18-wheel tractor-trailer had moved onto the right shoulder at the intersection of Bergen and 17, said Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli. It pushed Goodell's Chevy Impala through the Bergen intersection and into a retaining wall next to a residential area. Goodell was pronounced dead at 1:41 a.m.

He was a graduate of Waldwick High School. Waldwick Chief Mark Messner called Goodell an "outstanding and proactive officer" who would be "sorely missed." He was in the Marines, and was an experienced traffic and radar officer.

As if NJ didn't have a big enough hard on for truck drivers already ...

I doubt this would be considered capital murder to warrant the death penalty. Vehicular manslaughter, yes. I'd certainly be curious to know what comes out of it.

There's simply no excuse for this. Very tragic.

The government doesn't have to try very hard to slap us with more regs... These bonehead drivers are doing it on their own they're making it very easy...

Should be capital murder. You kill a cop they kill you. Had this been a situation where cop pulled out in front of driver or something the cop did then I could see that. May not be intentional but happened none the less

Unless they can prove he did it intentionally, it's manslaughter, not murder. Don't get me wrong, he definitely needs to be charged.
