We sit for hours for free while they wait to the last minutes to unload.

    Why wouldn't they?

My company has asked me if I wanted to run dedicated for a DC that needed extra help. I always reply "no thanks". It is a daily salary that's half what it should be.

I think it's more convenient (cheaper) for Walmart to have someone else deal with the reefer units (fuel and maintenance).

It probably is cheaper for them. Especially since they invest so much into their drivers. My company only wants to pay $180 per day that I'm dedicated to Walmart. I can make almost double that on my mileage rate so why work cheap?

Drop and hook baby! Now that I think about it, our dry grocery (3000+ lb pallets of canned goods lol) was brought by Walmart drivers too. Very rarely were those live unloads.

I met a Walmart Driver Ambassador once. Least that is what I think he was called. Had a different kind of uniform on and came in on a new hires truck that was being evaluated or something. He was a cool dude, definitely an old timer, probably seen more miles backwards than I've done forward.

The Walmart drivers are lazy cm don't like the live unloads that the perishable side deals with. They want drop and hook and that's it.

Just because Walmart pays their drivers well doesn't make them lazy. It does however mean that management has made a financially wise decision.

We still have to do dry grocery loads that are live unload, especially if they have more than one stop, which they usually do. Among fellow Walmart drivers who are most against doing the reefer loads, it seems most are long time drivers. I myself would like to do more than just dry grocery and GM loads.

I stand by my original comment as to why Walmart uses outside carriers to do a lot of the work the private fleet could do........To hedge their bets against a union being formed within the private fleet.
