Lately I have been reading news articles about Google's self driving cars. They are safe and reliable, currently logging at around 700.000 driver-less miles without an accident. There's a growing concern that I have about one day being unemployed since I drive for a living, although I am sure having a self driving truck will be more difficult to engineer than a car, although not impossible. I can see it happening for taxi cab drivers first, then perhaps bus drivers, but when would it happen for semi trucks? I am only 31, I have been in this industry for 10 years and I have 30-40 years until I retire. Whenever I read a report about these self-driving cars, there is always a comment about how it could put truck drivers out of business. So instead of listening to reporters who know nothing about the trucking industry, I decided to ask here to see what you all thought.

Been plenty of talk on here the last year about this very subject. Not to worry. I'd like to see a driver-less truck navigate into the hole in the staging area I'm at now. How is a driver-less truck going to check into receiving/shipping? How is a driverless truck going to pay the lumper? How is a driverless truck going to navigate along snow-covered, icy roads? How is a driverless truck going to handle a DOT inspection? How is a driverless truck going to beat on a stuck sliding tandem pin? How is a driverless truck going to sweep out a trailer? How is a driverless truck going to place/remove load locks? How is a driverless truck going to deal with OS&D? I could go on and on but you get the point.

Not to mention how are they going to behave in construction areas or on roads with no paint lines or dealing with detours? These issues will be impossible to deal with for automated cars, never mind 70 foot rigs. The only logical usage for them that could maybe be managed would be on the cross-country portion of a trip, how are they going to fuel themselves?
In a highly controlled "real world" setting, maybe Google is seeing "positive" test results, but this is hardly the REAL, real world.Tonythetruckerdude, Joetro, Boy Howdey and 1 other person Thank this. -

Nothing new. I have been seeing driver-less vehicles on the roads for decades.

None of the vehicles being tested are human-less. Google cannot even create a smartphone that does not crash. To think that such a thing as a driver-less vehicle would be deployed on every road is a Silicon Valley pipe dream that will only result in more tax payer money being wasted. I have features on trucks I have driven in recent years that is meant to improve safety, such as the OnGuard collision avoidance system, which is downright dangerous! The safety equipment on the Walmart truck in NJ that killed one and injured a few failed to properly function. All it would take is one or more high profile accidents involving a driver-less vehicle and the public would demand politicians remove them from the road, which they would.
I am in favor of driver-less or pilot-less equipment being used by the military to go into areas without risking the lives of our brave men and women, but driver-less vehicles if ever deployed to the general public will be priced so high that only a small percentage of people will be able to afford or be willing to spend. These stories are good at trying to take the public's attention away from much bigger problems in our country that are not being addressed!"semi" retired, Freddy57, not4hire and 3 others Thank this. -
It never ceases to amaze me how closed minded truck drivers can be. Refusing to even contemplate the future. First of all, unless youre an engineer, stop trying to think like one. Use your head and do actual research instead of putting your nose in the air. Taking the time to explain such simple ideas and technology would be like trying to teach a dog the concept of making a fire by rubbing 2 sticks together, I'm not going to bother.

There are so many things going on in the big business/big government side of things that are just to create the illusion we "subjects" have nothing to be concerned with, big business and big government has everything "under control" ... just keep being amazed with your technology we have given you, and smoke your dope and have your non-consequential sex, and let the education system dumb you down and strip you of your morality, and don't worry about what you think you see coming.TomOfTx, Tonythetruckerdude and okiedokie Thank this.

nope they aleady have the protos running up and down the autobon in germany saw a peice on this already a month or so ago, I believe what they are striving for is a driver in a truck in front with two or three following with drivers and the last couple trucks sorta drafting off the front one. so like I said its just a prototype for now
