Check out http://www.expeditersonline.com/forum/ for information on expediting. You are missing the Expediting Expo (http://expediteexpo.com/) right now. It is held every summer in July.

    FedEx Custom Critical
    Panther
    Load On
    Bolt Express
    Landstar Express
    Try Hours
    Try State

are some of the larger expediting companies.

Most often with expediting companies you do not work directly for one of the companies, you work for one of their fleet owners. The companies usually will put you in touch with fleet owners in your area that are looking for drivers. Most will take on new drivers without any expedience.

Express freight is run on Vans, Straight Trucks, and Tracker Trailers and the pay can very a lot. The best opportunities in express are usually for teams.

An expediting company is or was a company that took small amounts of freight on an "emergency" basis from a shipper to a consignee. Roberts Express started the truck type of expediting but it's been around for a long long time. Most of the shipping happened in the Automotive industry where they were using Just In Time manufacturing/inventory control and would have to have a material or parts picked up quickly and taken to their plant straight through.

BUT this has changed. Those companies have diversified, there isn't really a lot of true expedite freight, no matter what the companies say. A lot of it is "opps' freight - we forgot to get it on the truck - stuff.

Panther, Landstar, and others, even FedEx all use the word expedite as a selling point now.

    OK understand that.
    OK why?

This isn't an easy business and for most who don't grow up in it, or have some exposure, the failure rate is rather high.

I own trucks, I don't have a trucking company. If I wasn't so bent on not dealing with the day by day operations of owning them, I would make more money but it isn't for the short term that I own them, it is a long term plan. It took me about 6 years to get it together and that is after weeks on the road and hours of talking and buying coffee and food for those who have been doing this for a long time.

The positive people were the ones who I stayed away from because there was always a catch to what they were telling me, so I listened, kept notes and kept looking around.

Those are the ones who YOU listen to, you find out why they failed or are failing and try to learn from that. See here is what I learned a long time ago, YOU can't just find out on your own, you have people who depend on you to keep them working and by having an attitude that you will learn by trial and error seems to say "I don't respect my workers".

There are a lot more downfalls and pits in this industry, mainly because of the size of it. I've never had to worry about things in the past with other businesses but this one I worry about a lot of things.

    What degrees?

Unless you have an English degree, or some obscure field of study, I think you can apply something from them to a business, if nothing else it is a discipline that will help you.

Figure that your income would be about $45k for the first few years. and I would recommend that you get into the business by being in the driver's seat.

@Ridgeline, to your question why. I did somewhat grow up around trucking. I have, for years, been paying attention and learning. You learn a lot by keeping your mouth closed and paying attention but asking questions about things that you do not understand. As for my degrees, I have a double Associate of Science in Business Office Technology and MicroComputers, a Bachelor in Business, and a Master in Criminal Justice and currently working on a second Master in Homeland Security. All of those degrees will help me in the business field and yes, they were very good disciplining tools that I will always take with me in whatever I do, in life and on the job. I do plan on being in the drivers' seat but will always be open to learning new and old things.

@Ridgeline, sorry but I forgot to mention about those positive and negative people. The positive people are those that I know and have been in the trucking business for years and have given me good tips on the what not to do and the what to do. The negative ones that I will definitely stay away from is because I know for sure they were lazy, did not want to run, and wanted to stay home more than they should have. Put it like this, they wanted to be, did become lease operators, but I call them wanna be because they did not do what was required to be in this position and had the nerve to complain and get mad because things didn't work out for them. They would go home and then when it was time to go back out, they made up excuses or lied to not go back out until the middle of pay period but had the nerve to complain. They wanted to have different females in different states, road ######, and some of them actually did, and had a wife at home with kids. But thought good things were going to come to them, right!!!!.. They did not know how to run a business or knew nothing about business, but thought just because they were getting the pay of O/O they would be ok, but splurged with what they did get paid and ended up loosing cars and the roof over their heads. These are just a few examples and why these negative people can tell me nothing but I did learn from them what not to do. These negative people are the very same ones that are telling me, "nah gurl, that ain't something you wanna do, take it from me, I know because I tried to own my own truck"., NO THANK YOU!!!!, keep your negativity.

I'm calling ******** on the it doesn't take decades to make 100k a year. Most people never make that who have been working for 20, 30, or even 40 years. Only a small percentage of people in the US make over a 100k a year. I will agree with you that trucking is on the low end of the trade skill pay if not dead last.
