Once again, i can not say enough good things about this forum. What about Land Air? All the info on LandStar has been really great, we are looking at them also.We meet all the minimums with the exception of the hazmat on 2 of our drivers. Land Air doesn't sound bad either. HELP?!?!?!?!

After the Feds came after Landstar, it's been cleaned up a bit.
Before it was brokers owning trucks and keeping the best drives
for themselves.
Landstar overcharged for its services.mi
Landstar did not disclose how it arrived at the owner's pay.
All that has to be in the open, so talk and see if you like how the numbers add up. At the MATS show in March their reps were afraid
to give numbers, claimed they were 'at the office' but were trying to
recuit new people to drive for them.
"The more drivers we have the more money we make" was told to me with a laugh. Wonder if the phrase had a double meaning. -
FEDS going after Landstar
Do you have any proof of these claims? Most of these sound like when OOIDA went after them and the case eventually got thrown out of court.
Because they do not pay cents per mile like so many other carriers they don't give out "average O/O pay". There is no such thing at Landstar. They haul every thing from super cheap van freight to flatbed to stepdeck to very heavy haul that can run over $100 per mile. Its not possible to give you a "average per mile" like many other carriers do. -
When I was discussing leasing on to Landstar, they were very willing to answer any and all questions. Directions to the website and all. This was back in the park n view days, and before wifi.
I have not heard of anything like this. The only thing in the past was Landstar Ligon's problems which they did pay a fine for it.
The website will give a per mile, but as you said, the freight pays quite a difference across the board. -
Should clarify, when I tried to get information to write an article on the changes the company (Landstar) had agreed to make I was passed on to the spokesman, the man in BLUE. The women were afraid to even admit that the title on their badges represented their jobs.
I was interested in finding out what qualifications a recuiter had that allows him/her to decide the future of an applying candidate. One candid soul did admit that her job, in a different area," had become so boring after three years, she'd applied to be a recruiter.
Now this was interesting to me.
How long was your training for the new job I asked...ahh, not long she replied. "I had done the logs."
Do you do some driving yourself? ...Ahh, no.
Have you ever taken the course to get a CDL?... Ahh, no.
Have you ever ridden in a truck? Ahh..no, not that either.
Then how do you know who would make a good driver for your company?
She froze, she regained her voice and said, see that man over there, he can answer your questions. I turned to look, but it's you I want to talk to, you are the recuiter I insisted. In less than 15 seconds she had made eye contact with another woman and excused herself, "I have a call I have to take" and hid the rest of the time I was around Landstar's area. A few other women came to tell me she was on a long distance call. Backing her up, they hung closely.
The man who was recruiting a husband/wife team (new drivers,) couldn't answer questions either, he had left his answers in 'the office.' Now I wonder how many drivers getting this 'wall' go ahead and sign up. The couple I saw walked away.
Myself, without far more information, I wouldn't even consider Landstar; I know from experience it's all great in the 'honeymoon' period and if this is the 'honeymoon' period I don't want to imagine what comes next. In the next few months I'll finish gathering more information on the company to see if they live up to their 'name.' -
I've run into guys with 18 yrs and 20+ yrs of driving with Landstar. They all complain to high heaven but when you ask them why they don't leave if its that bad, they reply that its worse other places, and that ends the conversation. And I've met their 4 million miler.
Obviously they can't be as bad MrsFuzzy as you've already made your mind up that they are. But thats OK, not every company is the right fit for every person. -
