Yeah, winter time you WILL chain or sit it out. Portland and Seattle, very congested during rush hour. If you do L.A.- Bay area, it seems you sit all day after getting empty, then load late and drive all night to get there.

I rented a timeshare off TUG ( www.tugbbs.com ) when I played in the WSOP.

OP: If you want to stay on i5/99, look into May, Interstate, Gordon, central oregon trucking co, etc You might also look into Fed ex, ups, reddaway, saia, & con-way freight.

it sucks. It's the most boring highway in the system. Good money though if you get a lot of Portland to LA area runs. Some tips about I-5

    1) flying J in Lodi fills up after 4pm don't plan for that stop.
    2) exit 86 in Oregon. Best restaurant on 5 however yu will not be there often if you follow the next tip
    3) if you're carrying a heavy load, you can exit i5 at US 97 in weed CA, and take it into oregon to hwy 58 and down Willamette pass, save you time.
    4) watch your hours when delivering in WA north of Olympia as easy parking overnight is sparse

    AfterShock and rcpilot Thank this.

For food best places are 1) heaven on earth exit 86 in oregon
    2) creek side eexit 99 In Oregon
    3) pollard flat exit 712 in CA (if conservative politics and pro gun political views offend you then scratch this off the list
    4) witham exit 30 In OR

oregons lack of sales tax makes the meals taste better

i did that entire stretch once. from a naval base on the other side of the lakes northwest of seattle. all the way down to south of san diego.

talk about a long boring 3 day trip. my first stop. was the oregon scale for a lvl 1. that was mighty thoughtful of them wanting to give me a new sticker.

hope i never have to do that drive again.

    See below.
I agree with the posters before me who opined that runnin' I-5 through three states would satisfy the OTR requirements pertaining to experience.

    YuP!
It has it's moments, especially runnin' at night. More lonely for me than boring.
When runnin' US 97 ---> Hwy 58 durin' the summer months keep an eye out for vacationers/campers. Their attention isn't always on the road.
Mileage wise both routes, I-5 & 97 ---> 58 are 'bout the same.

    OH!
Small town on US 97 in California just before the Oregon border called Doris, ....
watch your speed through there. It's a curvy road

If not for that restaurant, runnin' US 97 to Hwy 58 would be perfect. As it is, it's the perfect excuse to run I-5 straight through.
Lack of a tax rebate on fuel in Oregon kinda pinches when feedin' the Big truck. And how much is the road use tax in Oregon? Last I recall it was 14.5 cents a mile.

If y'all like olives, --- green, ripe or inbetwixt, stop in Corning California --- just south of Redding. "Olive City". They have tasting rooms with all kinds of different olives.

    Let us know what'cha decide?

Good luck and best of success wishes.

Thanks gentlemen for the responses, I have driven the Cali I-5 portion with another company, way too familiar with the lack of parking here in Cali after 3-4 pm LOL... The CA/OR/WA outfit is offering .04 more per mile, APU's (A BIG plus) w/ a fridge :) , no Qualcomm, and ...wait ...wait...Paper logs!!! While the mega is using the electronic logs and NO APU's.... So I guess I will enjoy the I-5 as best as I can!!

There certainly are worse roads to be trucking over. If the outfit you are going to pays well, (.04 MORE per mile may be good, or may be terrible, depending on what you are making now,) :biggrin_25523: it sounds like a pretty good deal. After all you're in this for the bucks, not for the scenery. And having an APU and paper logs is certainly a couple of large +s.:yes2557: As far as no QC, that can sort of be a two edged sword.
