I'm gonna be a first time o/o and i know it requires a massive commitment and a desire to be more than just good. If im home every week its because i had a load running through the house and considering i live right off of 95 in Md thats not too farfetched. I plan to have more of a homelife than i did but thats only after i meet my minimum weekly income which i will decide once i get my truck and see what kind of mileage it gets but im estimating right 35-3900 is my minimum to be happy and will keep everything paid anything over that is icing and will go to saving and extra truck payments. I look at it like this im willing to pay myself way less than what i currently make to make this work for me i make around 75k a year i'm willing to live off of 55-60k to be successful

This was supposed to go to Jarhead but for some reason he can't receive messages.
Been studying the posts and need some advice. My son and I are teaming....1st year....and looking at what to do once our year runs out. Several options that I was looking at. Some background info first.
1. I'm retired Army E-8 so I have retirement and disability. I owe $75k on my house and am worth around 400k but mostly it's tied up in real estate and IRA/401K. I can probably have a healthy 50k for a downpayment at one year of driving.
2. My son, served four years in the Marines, has no debt and lives in one of my properties. He's comfortable to say the least. He has around 20k in savings but he also has a young family.
3. We have been averaging 6000-7000 miles a week teaming but we haven't been home much either. We like it but I personally would like to go home every now and then. I've been home 4 days since 30 June.
My question is....Are their team IC's? Can it be profitable for us? Would it be better to share the truck where he runs three weeks and I run one? Seems as long as the truck is moving we are making money?
Both of us are disciplined and have the time-management thing already figured out. I think my son will perform better as a team than as a solo. Just my opinion! I'm envisioning me booking the loads and he running the loads.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated. -

If we say you have around 50,000 expendable income I would test the waters with a used unit and have no payment you can buy several 08-09 units in the 500k on miles range that should give you 2 good years of team use .
Or
Put 30k down on a NEW UNIT through SNI FINANCE and keep 20k in emergency reserves this gives you a NEW TRUCK and WARRANTY and a more attractive payment or lower which ever you prefer .
SNI has tons of TEAM FREIGHT so it would definitely be a step in the right direction in your financial situation . -
i think at least one of you is disciplined enough to run the trucktake your time figuring out the in and outs and watch the lanes and rates... you'll do just fine... make sure to know the cost per mile to run includes both drivers wages... also be warned that trucking is not a occupation but a disease
just sayin... semper fi
motorheads5 and Jar-Head Thank this. -
Thank you gentlemen....I thought about leasing for a year because I know we're going to put 300k miles on a unit and I'm afraid if I get one with 400k miles or more it may spend a lot of time getting worked on. I have also looked at Glider kits but once again I don't know enough about them to make an educated decision.
Headed from Lincoln, NE to Laredo i the morning! -

SOME THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT ME !!!
I started my journey looking at the SNI CHOICE PROGRAM just over 2 YEARS AGO and hem hauled around and even schelduled 2 orientations and backed out ...
WHY you may ask ? FEAR - FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN . I have had my own truck for years but had never actually had a CHOICE or DISPATCHED MYSELF.
I read ALL of the SNI CHOICE threads the successful folks and the failures and I learned what I needed to do in order to make this a go and that was DO MORE RESEARCH ... BUT HOW ? I have done read all theMESSAGE BOARD THREADS - I am a CERTIFIED EXPERT RIGHT ?
WRONG - So i sought out information the best way I could and that was scour every TRUCK STOP i could and find SNI CHOICE DRIVERS and thats what I did . I was able to gain valuable information such as being able to watch them BOOK THEIR OWN LOADS and SEE THE PROCESS first hand and learn several different tricks of the Trade just by WATCHING , LEARNING and ABSORBING the information I was so lucky to get . I met proabably 20 drivers over the course of the 2 years I was learning the information I wanted to know. WHAT I FOUND OUT WAS .... EVERYONE does thingsDIFFERENT but you learn little bits and pieces from each in order to make you feel in that comfort zone to taking that next leap.
So since I was able to do tons of research . The research I did helped me to OVERCOME THE FEAR ... THE FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN .. THE FEAR OF NOT KNOWING ... THE FEAR.. OF BEING UNSURE OF YOURSELF ...
CAN i DO THIS .... ?
QUESTIONS YOU ASK YOURSELF
1. Can I do this
2. Will I be able to be SUCSESSFUL
3. Can I adjust from mileage to percentage
4. What are the rates going to be will they support what I need to make it a GO.
5. What kind of revenue could I expect
6. Fuel cutoff date
7. Payroll cut off
8. Paper work requirements
9. E logs and making money , will it work or will i lose my socks trying this
10. Can my wife help me ?
11. Will SNI let my wife help me on the load board
12 Whats the learning curve
13 Whats the best lanes
14 where is the best freight
15 Drop and Hook %
16 Is this just the SCHNEIDER OVERFLOW FREIGHT or is this REAL FREIGHT ... Am I just gonna be a SUPLEMENTAL TRUCK or is this REAL
17 Is there support and will they help you or am I getting thrown to the wolves so to speak
EVERY QUESTION YOU HAVE ASKED YOURSELF - SO DID I
In closing on this post . My intentions on this thread from the begining and going forward are to HELP YOU UNDERSTAND HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS by taking my 2 plus years or research and put it out here for the next person in line who has the same questions or concerns as I did coming into this program.
IS IT FOR EVERYONE - NO
CAN YOU GUARANTEE SUCCESS - NO
WILL YOU AND OTHERS HERE - HELP ME - YES
CAN I MAKE IT WITH A LEASE TRUCK FROM SCHNEIDER - YES
CAN YOU TEACH ME HOW TO RUN MY TRUCK EFFIENTLY -YES
My "LESSONS" here on this thread are designed to walk you through the process and help you avoid the 2 years I took to do this and condense in into a week or 2 to help you make your decision .
I hope you can see the value in the information I am trying to give
I have walked a MILE or 2 in YOUR SHOES.... But in the end the decision still is yours and you have to make the decision to jump or to stay comfortable .
Business is about RISKS and its the ones who take THE RISK who reap THE REWARDS in the end.

If I didn't have a baby, wife, and 5 other kids to support id sign up. Plus my credit is crap and I have no savings so not the best time to start a business.
